Great article. I learned alot about the V6 and V12 GMC engines. I don't recall ever seeing one in "the flesh".

As a kid, we had a late 60's GMC dump truck with the 637 V8, what a low revving torque monster...

Were the V6's offered in Canadian built light GMCs or just the American ones?

This USAF missile launcher most likely the most interesting use of the twin six power.

But then again perhaps the Blastolene B-702  in the wildest use of the twin six.

The B702 Randy Grubb Blastolene hand made aluminum body V12 engine

I believe the correct answer is no.

I think not as I have very seldom ever seen one and I'm sure they did not want to complicate the assembly line here. My 67 GMC has the 292 Chevy six which is quite capable.

I guess this would mean the Canadian GMCs are like the Canadian Pontiacs, sort of unique then.

I've always viewed the GMC here in Canada as Pontiac Trucks as they were sold in the same dealerships and marketed side by side in many campaigns. In the 50's the Pontiac Sedan Delivery is actually in a GMC sales brochure. I have often said that perhaps Todd could consider adding GMC to this website, - Canadian Pontiac, Acadian Beaumont & GMC Resource.

Interesting topic started here with the Pontiac/GMC relationship. The GMC six cylinder (228, 248, 270, 302) engines started production in 1939. Before 1939 the US built GMC trucks used the flat head Pontiac six cylinder.

Yes and in the mid fifties GMC pick ups had Pontiac V8's, they differed in marketing by 1 cubic inch different. If you have ever been to Detroit and Pontiac you would know that the GMC factory was on South Opdyke Rd. not far from the Pontiac factory.

Took a couple pics of one at a local cruise night years ago, pretty neat to see the spark plugs in between the valve covers.
I apologize in advance for the upside down pics, not sure why it keeps doing that.

In the 70s I had a customer with a 1966 Chevy C-30 dump truck. The 292 six was worn out and he had a good 283 from his old car and wanted it swapped in. We installed the 283 and it worked really well. In a couple of weeks he was back and let us know that the gas mileage was much better with the 283.

They weighed 738 lbs in the small v6 and up to 1485 lbs in the biggest v12. Wiki says they were built until 1974 and in later years came in diesel.

738 lbs is heavier than a bb, 1485 is heavier than 2 big blocks. Not a surprise they were hard on fuel. Pretty cool engines in some hot rods today.

I remember talking with a mechanic that worked for Smith Transport in the 60s. They had several v12 GMC transport tractors and said they worked well, but were finicky to tune up. When they started replacing the trucks the company bought Fords with 534 gas v8s. The Ford trucks were much harder on fuel than the GMC v12.

X2 Re adding GMC to the forum. Over the the 42 yrs Ive been driving lve owned 5 General Motors trucks. All of them GMC. First a 64 1/2 ton short box step side 283 4spd followed by a 59 1/2 ton short box fleet side 261 3 on the tree.  Next was a 76 Sierra Grande 3/4 ton camper special sold in 83 after arrival of 3rd child.  #4 was an 86 Wrangler 1/2 ton long box Expo 86 edition. Currently own a 2009 GMC Sierra SLE 1/2 ton extended cab 4x4 with a 5.3. Goes like stink and with cylinder de activation gets up to 25 mpg on the highway. Love the 2009 but really miss the first 2.
