When you don't have the right puller

And the timing gear needs to come off the crank. Two starter bolts with flanged heads, the flanges engage in the back of the gear better than just a 9/16" head.

Hammer handles keep the outer end of the bolts from moving inward. Other hammer handle prevents the crank turning.  Hose clamp keeps the inner end of the bolts from slipping off the gear. Harmonic balancer puller and an impact, it looks awful but worked great.

I know lots of car guys who get creative when they don't have the right tool for the job.

Just a slight variation on the adage if it doesn't work get a bigger hammer. In your case get more hammers!

Pretty slick indeed!

I make use of wood for doing special work, it can be custom fit tight and hammered/tapped in place. You have to learn how to hold your mouth just right when you are not doing a tv car rebuild?

LOL, yup. When I saw those headed for the garbage I said "no way".  I dump out boxes of bolts, connectors, retainters etc into them when I'm digging through there looking for a particular item. So much easier than digging into a little box filled with small pieces.

Yes, most of us likely don't post pictures of how we do certain things because it's not very glamorous. We don't all have the perfectly equipped tool box, that's for sure. And those guys on TV never even seem to get their hands dirty.

Slick! I love this kind of thing Carl. Do it all the time. I hate being defeated by not having that "perfect" tool.

Exactly! It's the thing about defeat that's unbearable!

It goes much easier when you have the right tools, but sometimes you have to improvise.

This reminds me of when I was a young satellite tech, installing satellite telephones up in the arctic for the oil & gas industry. I had to make do with what I had, as I couldn't call anyone because I was installing the phone.

"Necessity is the mother of invention".

One of the best thing we can ever teach others, including our kids, is problem solving and mechanics is certainly a great area to learn that in.

I did lots of things like this when I was working. The way some industrial equipment is built you could tell that the engineer that designed it wasnt a mechanic and never thought about servicing it.
