Just under 2,000 people currently work at the GM CAMI Ingersoll plant.

The plant first opened on April 1st, 1989 and currently builds the Chevy Equinox crossover only.

Equinox models destined for consumption in the U.S. and Canada are built at the GM San Luis Potosi plant in Mexico as well.

I worked there for 7 years. If I had stuck with it I would be retiring next year. Most of my friends whom I keep in contact with have retired this year. If I had better seniority (and thus a better job there) I would likely have stayed.

I worked at the Windsor GM Transmission Plant for 11 years. I had great seniority #25  out of 150 tool and die makers.

If I had stayed,I would have been a basket case  or had serious health issues.

I truly believe I wouldn't have lasted to long after retirement. Life has been very good outside of those plant walls....no regrets.

I had the same experience George. I started in the weld shop and was there for about 6 years. The union negotiated a "Production Support Group" which was a team of workers who would fill in for absent workers. All the low seniority guys were placed into it. Some guys enjoyed it but I'm a bit a creature of habit and like to know what I'm going to be doing each day. I'd arrive at the welding shop and be sent down to assembly which was about a 1/2 km walk and usually it was the guys on the crap jobs that called in sick. I'd get little to know training on these jobs and had one helluva time trying to keep up.
Also hated the fact I was spending lunch and breaks with people I didn't know. I did that for about a year and that was enough for me. It was a big pay cut going back into the dealership service world but money isn't everything.
