Safety Glasses, goggles, Face shields...

I have officially reached the age of long-arm-syndrome.  I cannot see clearly up close. I have progressive lenses in my glasses, but I find myself struggling to find the sweet spot so I can actually make out details.  Often I can see better with no glasses at all and use the long-arm technique.

In the shop, my regular glasses are not safety glass and do not have side shields.  Most safety glasses do not fit over my prescription glasses.  Even the ones that are supposed to fit over, don't really fit.

I have tried numerous styles and shapes with little success.  Usually, I leave my prescription glasses where they're safe, and just use the safety glasses (my distance vision is really not too bad), but it seems I am always struggling to make out the fine details.  Especially when I'm under the vehicle - I can't simply back away from whatever I'm looking at to get it in focus (need to raise the car!).  When I do find a pair of glasses that seem to provide good protection, they fog up or my sweat drips into the lense.

In my welding helmet, I have a cheater lense and it works, but I can't see a thing when I lift my head even with the auto-darkening.

I saw these, and I think they're worth a try.  I will pick some up the next time I'm near a store.

Years ago I had prescription safety glasses, but they're very expensive, and I do a lot of welding, grinding etc.  Safety glasses are all plastic and it seems they don't last long enough to make their big $$$ cost worthwhile.  I've also tried the full face shields and I use them for some specific tasks, but often they're too bulky.

Anybody come up with something that actually works?

I'm the opposite of you. I need glasses to see far away and nothing for reading. I have progressives however I still find reading uncomfortable and usually take the glasses off. Same for working under a dash etc. I see better with the glasses off. What I really want are progressives where the bottom half is just plain glass but nobody makes them.

like Todd I need glass only for distance. I could pass my drivers test with out glasses for car but they restricted me for my tractor trailer license . i need to take them off to read , then I got to the point I only use them to drive. I often get asked how old i am and how i can read things with out glasses

When I was working I had bifocals....it was a disaster, as you said finding that "sweet spot".

Tried them for a few days and ended up just wearing safety glasses while on the lathe and milling machines,

with my glasses in my pocket. I did work with some fellows who needed glasses for reading and they ended up wearing

this style and it was easy for them to slip them up and down on their head when needed.

Another fellow uses those cheap reading glasses found in Walmart or the Loonie store.

He buys two pairs because his vision is different in each eye. He takes the lens that's right from one pair and

replaces it into the other pair that's right in the other eye and gets a almost perfect pair.

My son buys glasses from Zenni  online for $8.00 a pair and buys 3 or 4 pairs in various colours of the same model.

Not the greatest quality frames, but they work. For bifocals you need accurate measurements when ordering online.
