Need a new fridge. Opinions on what to buy, what to avoid?

After 20 years our 69x35x30 GE Profile side by side is loosing it's cool. All the control are at max now. Seals are perfect still.

I'm going to pull it out today and see if it's just a matter that the cooling coil is dusty and dirty. If yes, I'll vacuum it out and give it one more try. If it's not dirty, then it's probably time.

From those who recently went through this, any advice on what we should be looking at, and what I should steer clear of. I've heard some bad stories of certain Korean brands, and don't want to get caught up in that.

We'll pay top dollar for a unit that might last. I know 20 years today is pushing it for sure, but give me 10 at least.

Any thoughts?

Depends on what you mean by top dollar, Bro. The Sub-Zero in this house was first plugged in 22 years ago. We've replaced the icemaker and a compressor, but it still works perfectly.

Dunno about their fridges, but we've bought a total of 6 LG laundry appliances over the past ten years, and have had nothing but good luck with 'em. Got screwed over, royally, by Maytag (now part of Whirlpool) on the first ones in this house, and would never have another appliance from their family of brands, which embraces most of the ones we grew up with. GE's now owned by Haier, and we've had a cheap example of their fridges keeping beer and surplus OJ, cheese, etc. cold or frozen in the garage for about ten years.

You may find repairing the Profile to be the best solution!

Your GE was likely a Camco made unit.

Canadian made.

A lot of GE is now off shore.

Did a lot of research on the in 2018 when our 20 year old Maytag was starting to fail.

Went with a US built Maytag.

Whirlpool and Maytag are like Pontiac/Chev.

Same company, same plant.

Our fridge is around 20 years old but there is a control that has been replaced twice and it was doing the same thing youve mentioned Mark. First thing I asked the tech was if it was worth fixing or to buy a new one. He said it was a really good fridge and was worth fixing but this controller does fail time to time. Its about a $200 fix each time. Compressor seems to have lasted well. Our freezer is close to 40 years old and I bought it used. My mom finally had to replace one of her freezers last year and it was over 60 years old. They made them a little better even 15 years ago.

You may want to check what's actually available. Not sure about Ontario but there's little as far a refrigerators available here in PEI. Everything sold out and I've heard it could be spring before some models are available again. Found this out when we needed to replace one that failed at work. You may be better off to fix the one you have.

While not in this predicament yet, I expect to be soon since our appliances now in their 21st year. Fridge, stove and DW are Maytag, with only the DW having a failed board @ over $300. Washer-dryer are 14 year old Kenmore's, no issues yet.

So also wondering the best of the worst brands these days.

keeping the condenser clean is your best preventive maintenance. Maybe twice a year vacuum it off especially if you have pets. As far as new go to Consumers Reports. Some units are not available in Canada but most are. We have an LG 36" 'door in door" . Probably 5-6 years old. Works great. Compressor comes with a 10 year warranty

Well, I pulled the fridge out, and sure enough the condenser was jammed full of dust bunnies. Vacuumed it all out front and back. Tipped it up at the front and cleaned from the bottom. Cleaned up the fan in the bottom back. Cleaned the blades.

While out I installed a new water solenoid valve that I'd been procrastinating about changing for a year. Slow, you'd fill your cup and the water would keep running for a second after letting go of the switch.

She's back in place, fingers crossed...

... was hopeful, but no go.

Freezer is better, but the fridge section is only seeing only 52 degrees F. Should be at least 40 I think.

So we went out and bought a new one. And you are right, there is a shortage of fridges out there. We chose one that will come in a week. Free delivery, and they'll take the old one away no charge.

Related question of sorts. Is it possible for the freezer section to be working fine but the fridge section to be non operative?

When we hit a dead end trying to get the right fridge I ended up on Canadian Appliance on line. It told us right then if fridge was in stock, and when delivery date would be. No shipping, and took away the old one free

I believe it draws the air from the freezer so if duct is plugged or fan not working then yes, freezer working but not fridge

It'll draw freezer air to the fridge lower crisper. But through a little vent. I think all the cooling in my fridge section now is due to the freezer.

I have a 27 Year old Kitchenaid, great fridge. My issues which sound like yours was my defroster timer would stick sometimes. If you can find the timer (mine is top of fridge section, with the lights). See If you can advance the timer to get the defrosters to turn on and melt the frost in the freezer. My .02

We had the fridge unplugged for a few hours, and any frost melted away at that point.

We eneded up buying a LG LFXS28566S , which, for the most part seems ok in the reviews. Mostly positive. We'll see, we'll hope.

Nice looking anyway. Has the little door in a door gimmick.

 Same.
I miss Sears for appliances ... especially on "lack of selection" PEI.

Our washer and dryer are both from the late 1970's. The washer is a Maytag A806 which apparently is "The last of the great Washers". The dryer is a Canadian made heavy duty McClary. They came with the house.

The timer on the washer wasn't working so we called an appliance shop and asked if it was worth fixing. The reply was a hardy "ABSOLUTELY!"

Here' a photo of one from the interweb:

Maytag-806.jpg

Couldn't find a photo online of the dryer. While they both probably draw a few kilowatts of power they haven't had any problems since we've owned them. The cabinets on both could use restoring. Always thought if I end up retired with a ton of time on my hands I'd take them apart and refinish the cabinets.

Our fridge and stove are less exciting Kenmore's from circa 2014.

Our LG compressor puked out at 3 1/2 years. LG has a class action lawsuit against them in the US for this linear compressor but no such luck in Canada so we were stuck with the labour bill. LG paid the parts because they admit the linear compressor they had for a couple of years around 2015 was a piece of ****. Cost us about $270 to get a fridge fixed after less than 4 years. I wasn't amused but apparently the new ones are good. I assume we have a new style compressor because the fridge sounds totally different now. Other than that we love the fridge.

I sent them an email letting them know that in the future they won't see our business unless they make this right.

We've had Whirlpool stuff since we built the house 22 years ago.  Bought all new appliances then and still have them all running fine.  Only repairs I've had to do were to replace a pump and a drum coupler on the washing machine - when I told the guy at the parts depot the model of the washer, he said "keep it running as long as you can", meaning that the newer stuff is junk?

Scares me to think when I finally have to replace this stuff, what we'll be up against.  Brother in law bought a new top of the line fridge (LG?) a few years back and only got a few years out of it.  Seems like newer appliances are going for the gadgets rather than putting quality into their product - I think they hope to tap into the smart phone mentality where you buy one every few years because your current one is outdated... biggrin

Funny you speak of smart phone mentality, this new fridge is able to communicate with our phones. Can let you know some diagnostics, and will warn you if the door was left open. Big deal eh!

Anyway, the one we bought has a 10 year warrantee on the compressor. And only one year on everything else. Great. $260 for 4 more years if we choose (we have a year to decide), basically pay to bring it up to what it should come with. 5 years.

I was going to joke and say the ice maker is on a yearly subscription with one year free, but in a few years I probably won't be kidding!

$52 per year seems like a no brainer to me. With all that electronics in there its a small price to pay. I had to have a harness changed in a previous Kitchen Aid DW and the service tech told my wife it was a $1,400 job, but we had the extended warranty.

Called a tech and had him take a look. His diagnosis took seconds. Freezer fan was kaput.

As he didn't have a true or generic replacement with him he rigged up an older noisy one from his stash of used parts. Will be back with the generic which he had to order.

Thanks for the input because I really didn't know if by calling the tech I was throwing away dollars on a call when I was going to have to replace the whole fridge anyway.
