A Christmas Present To Myself ...

You can never have enough storage space. I got 2 new 8' x 20' sea containers delivered. They are cheaper and less labour intensive than a new wooden structure. I will build an additional 9' x 20' free-floating wooden "shed" in-between them. Also found a home for my I-beam hoist.

Why is the ground red? LOL!

I've been told containers are mouse proof. Is that true?

 Good stuff!

Been thinking of doing something like that as well. It wouldn't take much to close in the space between with a roof and and a back wall to shelter a car.  As I understand the codes here as long as a structure is on skids it doesn't need a permit.

Food for thought for sure!

I'm going to close in both ends and have a shallow-peaked roof. The front part will have easily moved storage so I can access the hoist.

The great thing about a free-floating "shed" in the middle is that you don't compromise the containers by drilling into them (good for resale value down the road), and it allows for the separate movement of the 2 containers.

No permit and no sore back.smile

Driving it in may be easy......getting out of the car once in is the problem.

My friend uses a winch to pull it in and out.

Not only are these things mouse proof, the vehicle stays very dry.

Can also be used as a guest house for visiting friends and relatives.wink

A friend of mine in Sask has stored a couple of 65 Custom sports in seacans successfully. The problem is once you're in how do you get out of the car!

I suggested burrowing out through the trunk but I guess he  is still agile and thin enough to wiggle his way out.

Better for Beaumonts!

Darryl, did you see the large structure on the way to Summerside that used Sea Cans as it's foundation?

They look like condensation would be a big issue. Why/how do they stay dry inside?

A friend of mine had a towing company and had two highway trailers in the yard at his business. He had a couple of collector cars and I hadnt thought about where he stored them. I was there one day and his float truck pulled in with his model T on the back. The driver opened the doors on one of the trailers, backed the float truck up to the trailer and rolled the model T into the trailer. The float truck and the highway trailer were very close to the same height from the ground. I looked in the trailer and there was also a 65 T bird in there. The other trailer had a Mustang and a mid 40s Ford car inside. I asked about his car storage choice and his reply was no taxes on the trailers, I would be taxed on another building.

Darryl, if you look at those small vents on the sides, the newer cans have several and they help with condensation. I had a 40 ft one, doors at both ends, it had 4 or 6 vents on each side and 1 on each door. It was 1 year old unit, I filled it with the garage and furniture when I sold my house. If you have condensation, see if you can add more vents, I never had any in mine.

Lucky dog. Bylaws in my area prohibit the use of them here. I wanted to set 2 of the 40 footers at the back of my property to store the future projects. They will have to lie in wait at my parents property for now. Pretty strict here in Halifax. Detached garages cant be over 750 square feet or higher than 15 feet, cannot have sea cans even if you put a peaked roof and siding on them, the list goes on.
The thing that bugs me is that I could build a garage as big as I could afford and 2 stories high as long as it was attached to the house. BS

Good for you Darryl and great idea. My cousin in Alberta did something similar a couple years ago with a couple of 40 footers. He set them 24 feet apart and with engineering he put pony walls along the edge and covered it with a truss roof. He has spent his lifetime in construction but still realized how much more reasonable it was to go this route.

Darryl, my son worked for River Valley Adventures a Segway outfit for a lot of summers.

They worked out of a Seacan in the downtown core. It would be put it in place for the summer and

then remover it when the weather changes in the fall.

He painted the Seacan one summer so it would look more attractive and interesting.

Might be an idea for you to dress up your Seacans......old  potato wagon ?  Match Box box ?

These containers were manufactured in March 2020.
