Computer Wizard help needed.

Here's my issue:

After hording my old computers for years (4 kids and two adults each had a computer or two)

I pulled the old hard drives and trashed the rest some time ago. A couple of weeks back I bought a IDE/SATA  with USB adaptor and

started looking into 14 old hard drives I had.I had lots of success (easy to do) looking through all of them on my windows 10

computer. Found hundreds of lost pictures that I was able to put onto my computer.

My issue is, I have three hard drives that  Windows 10 doesn't recognize (won't even show up)

and they are my oldest hard drives (IDE). One from 1993 and two from 1999.

I know it's because Windows 10 doesn't recognize Windows 95 and Windows 98.

I don't have any old computers except the one with Windows 10 in it, and I don't have Windows 95 or 98 programs.

So the question is,how do I get to read those hard drives and get Windows 10 to recognize those hard drives.

I've checked Google and Youtube but haven't found anything that could work for me.

I know a little about computers, but I easily get lost and confused if it involves too much on the programming end.

Anybody out there that can give me a solution or a suggestion?

Thanks,

-G

I have old picks on a drive that windows 10 won't open.

When I get a chance, I'll move the to a stick and see if my old XP laptop will open them.

Download.cnet.com has some ideas

Lost Picture Recover - CNET Download

I have found with this site that the free stuff isn't always the best.

All I have is a hard drive....How do I transfer them to a place to see what's on the hard drive?

Can't recover files you can't  see.

Not a computer expert, and certainly not on PCs, but maybe you can set up a virtual windows 98 system to work within winxows 10?

I'm afraid this is already over my head....don't understand how

this works or how to go about doing it from reading the link.

I've never used it, and it does look a little complicated, so probably not helpful.  My understanding is that you can set up your machine to run windows 98 inside of windows 10, kinda like a software package, but I've been using Macs for the past two decades, so my knowledge runs out there.

Hopefully somebody more knowledgeable than I can help you out.

Your best bet might be to find a super cheap old laptop with XP or 98 and use that one to read the drives.
I'm in the midst of trying to copy old VHS tapes to DVD using a Video capture device I bought 12 years ago. It plugs into your USB and has RCA plugs on it. My windows 10 loaded the software but can't seem to activate the driver so I have my old Windows XP laptop fired up. I had to walk away from it as I got it all set up and got the "blue screen of death". A reboot takes about 8 minutes because it's so old so here I am...

Yes we are not experts either biggrin

I would suggest you pick up a IDE computer.

There is one on kijiji Ontario for $30

Then you could recover and save the pics elsewhere.

But then again, no way of telling if that computer is going to find the files confuse

I  have done work on old VHS tapes and still have it set up to do in the basement.

I have a VHS player plugged into a recordable DVD player and everything is recorded onto a recordable DVD disc.

A disc I think would be easier to transfer onto  a computer if you wanted.

As for my hard drive issue,I think your right, I'll have to  find (hopefully just borrow) a Windows 98  machine to

open the hard drive and transfer files onto for Windows 10 to read.

I was hoping someone knew of a easy way of getting it onto a Windows 10 PC without a 98 machine.

My video capture gizmo is working. I'm currently copying a 90 minute video onto the computer and then can do some editing and burn it onto a DVD. Only 5 or 6 more to do.....
