 if the engine is original the OHV engine would be a 239 ci Y block(1st in 1954 american 

only)a little more HP than the flathead.Ford had to compete with GM's new V8 the 265 ci.

Ford quickly raised their engine sizes -272,292&312 ci.Mercury was a whole new story.
