1983 Chevy Malibu

Boy this one looks nice,

1983 Chevy Malibu aka Iraqi taxi | Classic Cars | City of Toronto | Kijiji

One owner! Great condition, 80k km interior is like new. Owner retired has not been driven since 2005 ran and drove perfect then. Does start and run but needs brakes. Little rust on driver side wheel wheel nothing big. Must see.

As I'm looking at the pictures I'm thinking "automatic?" I know of at least one around here that was converted to automatic but I don't think it's something that was commonly done.

Who ever the seller is, they are very very miss informed about what an iraqi mailibu is.  This car is in no way shape or form a 1981 iraqi ordered car.  Its just a run of the mill 1983 malibu base model sedan with no A/C and and automatic trans.   Boring!

1983 Chevy Malibu

I agree that isnt an Iraq Malibu. GM sent many cars overseas, but Iraq refused the 1981 Malibus. I dont know the circumstances but I have run into other Chevies that may have never made the trip to Iraq. One was a 1977 Impala. It had an exhaust leak and I found it had a resonator instead of a catalytic converter. The emissions sticker under the hood had non catalyst on it and it didnt say unleaded fuel only on the gas gauge. I had to order the resonator and it was the parts man at the dealership that told me it was an Iraq car.

The Iraqi Malibu thing was a very specific deal of 1981 Malibus between GM and Iraq that fell through.  It was almost all 1981 Malibu 4-door sedans equipped identically with V6 and 3-speed manual transmissions, dog dish hubcaps, etc.  The colours were the only thing that varied, IIRC.  There were also a few wagons in the deal, but they were V6 automatic.  They were all brought up to Canadian spec standards before they were sold to the public.

Here's a thread about it from last Feb:

I also ran into an Iraqi station wagon, but it was a V6 three speed manual like the sedans. The odd thing was it had manual brakes and I had a difficult time getting a master cylinder. The parts guy at the dealer wouldnt believe that it didnt have power brakes until I gave him the vin number. It did have power steering and A/C though.

Well that's interesting.  Back when I worked there I didn't see any wagons with manuals (or sedans with automatics) and the hearsay was that all the wagons were automatics.  Obviously at least one was made with a manual... cool!

I was also sitting here wondering if the average Joe could have ordered one equipped the same with the manual, or if the 3-speeds were a special run for Iraq.  It seems to me that I used to know the answer to this but just can't seem to recall at the moment.

I have 2 iraq transmissions  here are the pics

I ended up modifying the shifter position to use in my 65, so ignore some of my fabrication

but the trans is for sure an authientic 1981 iraqibu version

Some people swear they are a muncie, but i think its a saginaw.    Those cars did have the "heavy duty 3 speed"  whatever that consisted of.

To answer my question above, by brochures anyhow.

1981 (from US brochure), 3-speed manual available with base V6:

1983 (from Canadian brochure), only auto trans available:

That is a Saginaw transmission. The three speed Muncie has two bolts along the top of the side cover. The Saginaw has that one bolt in the middle of the top of the cover.
