1956 Pontiac Hy-Rail

Being a fan of pretty much all transporation vehicles, which of course includes trains and cars, you can't help but be drawn to those vehicles that can drive on both the rails and the roads.  I see the CN trucks around here all the time, that ride the rails for inspections and repairs.

So... I saw an ad for a Nevada railway museum on the back of one of my Classic Trains magazines and thought I'd look them up on the internet, as I was intrigued by the photo of their '56 Pontiac Hy-Rail car.  It turns out that they will take you out on the tracks in it, which sounds like a pretty cool experience to me.  So, I might have to add this one to a post-covid bucket list...

The story of the car is at the link:  https://www.nnry.com/pages/Hy-Rail.php

Cool!  I just found a couple of pics of local inspection cars from back when the Dominion Atlantic Railway was in service:

A 1936 McLaughlin Buick: It's notable that this rides on special wheels on the vehicle's axles, and therefore wouldn't have had the ability to switch between rails and roads.

1958 Pontiac:  This one appears to have a similar mechanism to the 1956 above to allow it to switch between rails and roads.

Love the old rail-running cars with the "cattle catchers"!

I'm not sure why that would be.  I also noticed there was a duplicate post for some reason, which I just deleted.

All the images are available at the link at the bottom of the post, if they are still not showing up for you.

Maybe a platform thing?

I can see them on Chrome on a Mac, and a Chromebook, but they don't show up on my phone, which uses the Android platform.

When I get a chance I'll download the pics and host them using the Attach function on this board.

As a summer student in 1971 I worked for a paper company that had a 50 mile rail line running north to their power dam. Our job was to repair the private telephone line that paralleled the track. Our work vehicle was a small rail scooter. About 30 miles up the track was a siding with pullman cars made into a pretty comfortable camp for entertaining publishers etc from the states. To get the "bigwigs" to and from the camp they used a station wagon adapted for use on the tracks. Very similar to the original picture but for the life of me I can't recall the make and model.

Did the Hi-Rail cars use special tires? Seems like there would be a ton of rail pressure bearing on a small contact area on the tire.
