Scammer

Phone rings just now, 7:50 AM

"Hello"

"Mr Stevenson?"

"Who's calling"

Heavy accent "XXXXXX from Visa security department"

"What's this regarding?"

"You're getting 2 charges on your Visa, one for $320 on ebay, one for $1000 for I-tunes cards"

"Perfect!"

"Pardon?"

"Perfect"

"You made those charges, right"

"Yes"

"Ok, thank you"

"SCAMMER, HAVE A NICE DAY"

I would still check your on-line banking or call the bank just in case.

Wasn't too long ago they got 32 Uber charges on my account in 22 minutes.

I did not receive a call but my account was locked up until I called them.

Johnnee just wanted to hear your voice !

Yes, I'd double check to make sure it's a scam. i had one of those calls a few years ago and it was from the credit card company.

Its interesting to think that both legitimate credit card companies people and actual Revenue Canada reps must be getting a lot more abuse than they ever used to get as a result of these scams. Not sure if that's karma or not but I wouldn't want to be either these days.

That does sound like a scam Carl but you can always ask them to list what other charges are on your card.

You guys talked me into playing safe and calling. I did and they confirmed they had not called me today. I was quite confident it was a scam because if I'd actually hung up on a legitimate call about a security breach they would call back right away and be able to confirm somehow that they were legitimate.

Me too, I got a call this morning at about 9:30 however it was an automated voice. The message mentioned that I got 2 charges: the first for $400.00 for an online purchase & the second for $1300.00 for an international money transfer. Then it said that if I made both purchases to press 1 or if I didn't press 2.

I hung up and called the phone number that appears behind my credit card instead. After 30 minutes on hold (and checking my account online) there was no such activity and the person told me it was a scam call.

Moral of the story: never press any option they give you!

About a year ago a guy at work fell for the CRA scam. He gave them everything before he realized he something was up. then he called the cops, and ran to his bank. Fortunately he had a terrible credit rating, and a pretty much empty bank account before the call.

I get the voice mail VISA call telling me about the use of my Visa Card for $500 and the funny thing is I don't have a Visa Card!

I just (5 minutes ago) received the "This is the security department of Visa credit cards. There were charges to your card in the amount of $600 ...." call. It was a recording. I've received the call probably a dozen times in the past 6 months. Often, they call at about 5:30 or 6 in the morning! That gets old pretty quick. Why does a phone waking you up make you think the worst...

After the first time, I called my credit card company to verify that it was a scam. Since then, I just hang up or occasionally I have just set the phone down and let it run until they hang up. I figure that by tying the line up for 5 or 10 minutes, I'm preventing them from harassing someone else. Given the number of times these bozos have called, maybe that's not the best approach. Interestingly, the latest recording even includes a number I can call them back at - and the number is in my area code. Must be some kind of VOIP account.

The other scam I get quite often is the "I'm James from Microsoft security. We've been receiving messages that your computer has been infected...".

My Mother-in-law got the same call ... 2 charges on her credit card. It seems these calls are making a round.

I had a call the other day and the display showed unknown number. I checked the message afterwards and a man with a very thick accent requested that I call Canada Pension to update my information, and left a call back number. I looked up the number for Canada Pension and called them and it was a legitimate call!

(Nasal, monotone recorded voice)

"Hi, this is Sharon from Visa security department. We've been trying to reach you for the last 2 hours. We will be cancelling your credit card in the next 24 hours. Blah blah blah,  press 1 for more information"
