Restoring a 1937 De Forest Crosley radio.

I know a few guys here are into radio repair at a working level. I really wish I had more knowledge, but I do find Mr. Carlson's lab YouTube channel completely mesmerizing, and love watching it, even when I have no clue what he's talking about. But in saying that, I've watched him long enough to begin to start to form at least some VERY basic concepts. And another neat thing...he's Canadian with a good manner that makes him easy to listen to.

Just got through (in 3 installments) of his 3.5 hour restoration video of a 1937 De Forest Crosley radio. And I have to say, it was worth every minute. What works of art these old radios are. They just do it for me.

We have an old radio repair shop here, they also do new stuff. Last time I was there they had a large floor model radio from the 30s, needed the wood refinished or else leave it the rat rod look. They couldnt fix that one so they added an mp3 setup to it, very cool.
We had one of these old radios with shortwave on it, I used to listen to radio Moscow during the Vietnam war, totally different news coverage than we got from CBC and the USA networks. Somewhere in between was the truth.

There's a fellow in his late 80's here who repairs antique radios. I took my 1937 Westinghouse to him a couple of years ago. What an interesting fellow! His house (turn of the century) was like a museum of old radios and record players. He did a fantastic job on my radio and pointed out shortcuts the guy who worked on it in the 80's took. Unfortunately Shortwave isn't what it used to be and there's not a lot to listen to anymore. It'll be a shame when these guys are gone as (like our old cars) not many young people are interested in fixing these.

Is he in Summerside. If so, I know him, he gave me a tour of his house. Nice guy. I gave him a whole bunch of tubes and stuff!

I've got one that I would love to get going but it needs more than I know how to do.

Its a top of the line Canadian built Victor Biacoustic radio, electrical phonograph/record changer and record recorder from 1932.

It could actually record from an attached microphone or the radio onto special soft compound 78 discs which was a long way ahead of its time in 1932. The orginal cost was about 300 bucks in the early days of  the depression so you can imagine that very few were sold. A little beat up but basically complete, its sits in my garage waiting...

Mr. Carlson is amazing. I have a cousin to his radio in my waiting to be restored pile aka hoard.

Another good one to watch is "glasslinger". Very talented, dresses a little differently.

Excellent topic.  I wish Mr. Carlson was closer.  I still have my Dad's Stewart Warner that requires a little "tuning."
