Lou Ottens, Inventor Of The Cassette Tape, Has Died

The Man Who Invented The Cassette Tape Has Died; Lou Ottens Was 94 : NPR

Lou Ottens, who put music lovers around the world on a path toward playlists and mixtapes by leading the invention of the first cassette tape, has died at age 94, according to media reports in the Netherlands. Ottens was a talented and influential engineer at Philips, where he also helped develop consumer compact discs.

Ottens died last Saturday, according to the Dutch news outlet NRC Handelsblad, which lists his age as 94.

The cassette tape was Ottens' answer to the large reel-to-reel tapes that provided high-quality sound but were seen as too clunky and expensive. He took on the challenge of shrinking tape technology in the early 1960s, when he became the head of new product development in Hasselt, Belgium, for the Dutch-based Philips technology company.

"Lou wanted music to be portable and accessible," says documentary filmmaker Zack Taylor, who spent days with Ottens for his film Cassette: A Documentary Mixtape.

Ottens' goal was to make something simple and affordable for anyone to use. As Taylor says, "He advocated for Philips to license this new format to other manufacturers for free, paving the way for cassettes to become a worldwide standard."

My father worked for Philips for 40 years in Corporate Accounting. Back in the day there was an employee store at the Leaside facility. The stuff we had was amazing because Philips was a world leader in electronics. We had coloured TV when only Bonanza and Ed Sullivan were in colour, beautiful console Hi Fi, transistor radios, appliances, Philishaves and of course I had a portable cassette deck player - recorder combo AM/FM/SW when they were first available. Philips was a very good company, every year they rented the Leaside High School auditorium and threw a huge Christmas party for the employee's children repleat with Philips gifts for all of us.

Our 1970 Tempest 2 door sedan was a radio delete car but Dad took it to work the first week we had it and they installed an AM/FM with reverberator and twin rear deck speakers with power rear deck antena.

Good question. I sold it to a guy from Stratford around 1987. A few years ago I bought the used car package to see if I could track it down. It was last registered in 1988 and had been painted maroon. I couldn't find the owner in the phone book but I always wonder if it's sitting in a barn somewhere.

I had "mixed tapes" that I made. I don't think I ever bought a prerecorded cassette tape. That way I could skip the "boring" songs on albumssmile.
