Water pump for the 261 Pontiac


Does anyone know if theres an after market water pump for this engine (261) for the Canadian Pontiac

The one for the 261 truck engine sits too far out. Ive read there was a part number of P192... or something or other. Anyway, any help would be appreciated folks. Im certain others have had this issue. Thx, Jefferson

As long as you have a good core there companies who will rebuild your pump. In Stoney Creek Ontario there is John Stuart who rebuilds water pumps. Wheel cylinders and other components. There is Cardone and Lares Corporation to name 2 large rebuilders.

I checked the GM parts book for Pontiac and Chevrolet. It shows 3774186 for 58-62 Pontiac 261 and 58-62 Chev 235 if that helps at all.

Jefferson, I see you are in Manitoba. I've had Autoline in Winnipeg rebuild one carb and 3 water pumps for me in the past couple of years. I've been happy with the pricing, the results and the turnaround time. I don't know if you can do it direct with Autoline. Are you near a Piston Ring store? I did it through our local store.

When I had my 57 Pathfinder and before the small block conversion I replaced the water pump on the 261 with a 235 Chevy one. The difference is/was how far the fan/pulley hub is pressed on to the pump shaft. From what I recall the hub had to be pressed further on. I supported the shaft from the back side and pressed the hub to the correct depth. Worked like a charm.

Thx for all your suggestions. Its good hear the rebuilds were a positive experience. Ive already contacted the company here in Winnipeg and they said they could rebuild it. Cheers folks.

Pls let me know if it works for you. It seems the flange sticking out 5 inch plus is an issue with that pump. I need 4 and change to keep my fan off the radiator, and I dont really wanna bend and pound it back for fear of buggering the bearings. But pls let us know. Thx

If it's like other pumps you can support the shaft and then use a press to put the flange in the spot where you want it. I'm not familiar with the 261 pump but I suspect it must work the same way?
