What damaged this piston?

I'm assembling a 283. Got the machine shop to press the new pistons onto the rods. Went to put the rings on the pistons. Took the ring out of the box and ran it all the way around the piston in the groove like I was taught, just to make sure it was loose in the groove all the way. It had one spot where it wouldn't fit into the groove. At first glance the piston looked ok but when you look in the right light real close you can see it right away. Something has squashed the piston and it pushed up enough on the groove to make it too tight for the ring to fit in. This close up shot shows it very well.

Did this happen in the machining process when the piston was made?

Did this happen at the machine shop when they pressed the piston on to the rod?

There's no way it's shipping damage, the packaging was perfect and it sure doesn't look like it was dropped. The bottom of the groove is pushed up, not squished from the top down like could happen if it was dropped or something dropped on it.

I know what I think but I want to see what ideas you guys have .

Id guess faulty machining from the factory.   That is crappy deal.

Sealed Power too, supposed to be good. At least in days gone by they were. They supplied a lot of the GM OEM stuff way back when.

Machining defect for sure with those fine grooves. The biggest issue is it's difficult to find a single matching replacement piston. Good luck.

If it were the flight of the Phoenix you'd use it, and I bet it would work.  Good luck.

LOL, yeah but in this case I am sure there's a match out there. Most guys want to sell sets though.

I sent a message to the guys I got it from, we'll see what they say.

Is it a newer set? If so, you or your customer should be covered no issue. It's obviously an manufacturers defect.

Haha no need on 283's. They've got good compression without it.

It's not actually mine, it belongs to a friend. I'm just assembling it for him.

Hi... Look up Sealed power here in Canada. (I think they used to have an office in St Catherines Ontario)

Call them and tell them your story...Worth a shot, you got nothing to lose, except your time.  They might help you out....

Pretty impressive customer service from the guys I got it from, I gotta say. I emailed them on Saturday and this came back to me before 9:00 AM today.

"CARL, SORRY FOR YOUR INCONVENIENCE. A SINGLE PISTON IS SHIPPING OUT TODAY TO YOU. THANKS, DON"

Those are the companies that you like dealing with. Anyone can make a mistake but owning up to them is stellar
