Kijiji Ontario Classic Car prices Rant

Just a rant thread.

Like what's going on with these car prices in Ontario on Kijiji?? Trying to correlate with the house pricing???

Multiple rust buckets for sale at $10K+, yet in other provinces you can find much better...

-10k Rust bucket- seller says great condition yet there's the car doesn't even come with an ownership?

-Someones asking $5700 for a car, when I found the car online, the purchaser bluntly says he paid $2200 for the car, stored it for a year; now its listed at $5700? when no work was done to it? Rust on every panel too.

-Another one asking over 8k: "Cars in great shape!! Solid! Except for the frame. Needs frame work drivers side patch"

-Last picture in the ad is what the car looks like when done. "15k asking price. All you need is another 10 grand and you have a show car" ??????

-15K for Cadillac- closer look and even in the ad states "has lots of bondo. Telling you right now, so don't need to bring a magnet"...

I don't understand...winkconfuse

This is what happens when the cost of borrowing is basically free.

Even with my interest rate reduced with help of a CP member,

I could not stomach paying the asking price for the 2+2

I think you can call it Spring fever.

Almost got me smile

I have been watching cars on US Autotrader and the prices have really jumped there too !

But on US Autotrader, or the American sites are you finding more for sale, and in better condition? I find a lot more options there in better shape. Yes, I'll find a couple overpriced but still seem better priced then here (Ontario) for the most part. Like better off buying it in the US, and bringing it back, except can't because borders closed. I wanted one off another site before. They said they would bring the car to Buffalo for $600 from Illinois! Which was really good in my opinion. Except they would not bring it across the border, and I doubt I could go there to pick it up.

I have a feeling the prices may stay silly this year for a bit and then reality will set in. I hope I'm right about that because it's hard on the hobby this way.

So many people seem to be flush with cash that many are paying the asking prices. It's crazy.

What's weird is it's not only classic cars. It's everything?

If you look other collectables as well; Comics, Sports Cards, Trading Cards, Original Movie Posters, rare VHS tapes. The prices skyrocketed to huge amounts. Some sports cards selling over 500k to over 1 million on this auction site.

But I don't understand the rust buckets selling for premium. The amount of money that is put into them (if one doesn't do the work themselves), it's like you are better off buying at Barrett Jackson or another auction house for one that's done.

We're into Never, Never Land. We're floating on an ocean of liquidity, and it's finding refuge wherever it can. Equities, bitcoins, residential real estate, "NFTs" (the newest tax on the stupid and gullible), as well as works of art, trading cards, celebrity cast-off items, and, yes, old cars, are all being elevated to ridiculous levels.

Warning to the uninitiated - this is NOT going to end well. 2008 will look like a minor pothole when this bubble bursts, as history teaches us, it will.

This is a trying time for us older types, who are acutely aware that our runway isn't infinite, but I would counsel that now is NOT the time to be investing in tangibles. Be patient and thoughtful. Bargains will return, eventually.

The guys who run Bring a Trailer have a weekly podcast. A week or so ago one of them said when it comes to buying an old car "10 grand is the new $1500". While I don't think that's 100% true as you do see the odd deal under 10k it was a bit sobering to hear that..

Barrett-Jackson was on last week....makes the sellers go mental.
The Covid thing doesn't help either.....People can't travel or even go out in some cases to spend money, so sellers think there is all this cash floating around.

I've been trying not to say too much, as I've complained about prices on this board many times before.

But... unless prices come back to "normal" again, I've been pretty much priced out of the hobby for now, or maybe forever.

Sure, I can go get bank loans, but even with low interest it's still real money that has to be paid back - not going that route ever again.  For a toy, like an old car that only gets used every now and then, if I don't have the cash to buy it outright, I can't afford it.  Then you still have to have money to sink into it just to keep it going, or to improve it as you'd like it to be.

So be it... if it's going to become a rich man's hobby, I have lots of other things that I can do with my time.  Let the Barrett Jackson guys impress each other with how much money they can throw around... money doesn't impress me nor has it ever... I just like the cars.  When it becomes more about the money than the cars... I'm out.

It's a Rich mans hobby only when you are looking for what the Rich man is interested in. Yes, prices have gone up across the board, but there are still good $6500 starter cars to get you in. Full size 4 door sedans are where I'd look. Forget any nice popular 2 door.

I've always said it when nice bottom line cars would pop up here, "Perfect car to get you into the hobby".

It was with this in mind that got me in with my 67 for 6500. Nobody cared for a moredoor, even with low miles, high line and a history. But in my mind, these are the cars you never see, and as such are way more interesting than the popular ones. Maybe it's just a personal thing, but I gravitate to the cars our families had when young, and we were not rich.

Totally agree and well said.  When I've been to a show and shine I always walk past the rows of restored high dollar muscle cars and go for the odd or  weathered stuff. (Like Canadian Pontiacs.) Those guys are lot more interesting to talk to as opposed than the snobs who scoff at you if you don't have the correct hose markings on your windshield washers.  Those guys are welcome to their trophy car world.  I'd rather drive.

Might have to start a Manitoba Rant page as I have too many vehicles......according to my wife. But, please be gentle with me as I am car comment sensitive and still want to remain as a CP member.

But, after 5 years of owning and tinkering with the Grande, the old girl will either stay in the horse barn in Winkler indefinitely, or find a new home somewhere. I can't see it being driven much in the upcoming summer months.

I should have not bought this 78 Silverado as I am enjoying it way too much and I can use it to haul stuff around, you know, give the F150 a break.

It is difficult to type this. I am not quite ready to post it but if I do, it would go on CP first.  crying.gif

This is why I wasn't wanting to say too much.   I wasn't posting to start a debate.

But you said it yourself... Forget any nice popular 2 door.

I'm not a newcomer to the hobby, I bought my first 'collector car', a Dodge B-body 2 door hardtop, in 1986, and have had many cars over the years.  I would like to have a nice 2-door hardtop again.   I understand inflation, but not practically doubling of prices within a few years.

I'm not a four door snob either, I would take your '67 in original unmodified condition, but good luck in finding one in that condition for that price now.  If I did get a four door, it would have to be a nice original example, not a clapped out half-rusted half-hearted hot rod project 4 door for $15K or whatever... like you are seeing in the ads today.

But anyhow... as the thread title said, it's just a rant, and a rant doesn't need to be corrected... it's just an expression of frustration... a way to get it out of your system.  So I've already said more than I needed or wanted to say about it.  smile

This thread could be a classic car price rant in general. I just brought up this very subject with my lovely wife this past weekend.

I've fuelled the car bank account by getting a good deal on a classic, investing time, parts and money to make a better vehicle and then selling for a profit. Generally I would make a couple bucks per hour profit for my time. However as I have been looking for a potential other "flip", most prices are, what I feel, are excessive for a pile of steaming $hit to be able to fix up and resell. To be able to get out my input the vehicle of choice needs to be reasonably popular to sell but as mentioned before those project vehicles are becoming unreasonably expensive.

As I am currently working on a Karmann Ghia and scouring for VW parts, I am taken back at the cost of beetles. When did those little pos become worth anything more than a couple grand?
