Ever see an A-body exhaust leak like this one?!

Had a bad exhaust leak on the 64 malibu wagon,  been driving me crazy because the manifold is metal to metal the way it should be, so cant ever leak,  heat riser is gutted and plugged, and the donut is good.  Where can it be leaking??  i cant see any cracks.  better just take it off and see.

Holy crap!!!!!!  rotted thru from the inside out!  crazy.   note:  this is not the original manifold for the car, it was a junkyard one,  probably from a swamp

Did it rot thru from the inside or had someone previously polished the inside too much trying to remove the rough casting? Is this what they call porting?

Well I'll be............ That is certainly a first for me too Dave, sure never seen that. The strange thing is, even if that manifold was sitting outside in a wrecking yard for years lying on the ground, I can't see how it could have had water pooled on the inside to rust it out. Look at the spot where it is, it seems like there's no way no matter what position it was in the water couldn't pool there. Another "never say never".

I am about 99% sure that i got this one from your favorite fargo yard,  hence the swamp,  but i did remove it from a 64 chevelle 283 motor that was in a car

its all stock,  no mods

Never seen that before. But if you pulled from a wrecker. Maybe the exhaust valve was open on that cyl and water got in? Bad casting maybe???

I'd say a defective casting. Probably an inclusion or thin spot unnoticed when new, and then it popped open after so many years of wear.

I'm with you. I'd bet it had a bubble in the casting.

Even installing aftermarket gaskets ,head to manifold, won't help that problem!! I've seen tractor manifolds rot out on the sides [no water accumulation there either] so I'm guessing that it was thin from outside source & finally "blew"

So, how many times did you change that gasket before you figured out the gasket wasnt the problem? Tough to see that unless you pull the manifold.

Good catch.

I have seen this on 4X4 plow trucks. I am in the Ontario rust belt where the heads rot off the manifold bolts also.
