Dome light. 65 wanted. Plus a convert to type 65 LED.

Anyone here have a usable dome light lens and the bulb clip retainer piece for a 65 CP B?

My Laurentian lens is ready to disintegrate. And the little plastic clip retainer in the base is toast. Literally burnt to a crisp. Fell apart when I removed the connectors to pull the base off the roof.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks, Mark

Dome light. 65

I believe I have a complete assembly including wiring. I will be at the club tomorrow and will confirm.

Bill.

I'm sure I have the lens, but not sure what clip you're referring to.

The base is metal, and there is a small plastic insert that fits in to retain and insulate from the base the two bulb clips. At least in 65.

Mark,

I have the metal base and wire harness. No lense or ring. Will remove tomorrow to inspect.

Bill.

These dome lights were used by gm over many years typically, I may have one from a 62 Chevy, the lens and or the ring may be the same?

No idea of what changes there were through the years, but at least, I think the style on the lens may have been a little different cross corporate.

Here's the assembly in question along with the remains of the plastic clip. As we all know, the original bulbs in these always ran super hot, I'm actually surprised they didn't actually ignite the lens or clip. It's not uncommon to have left the dome light on overnight.

It'll have a LED in it now.

Heres one for a 62 bel air from online images, the pattern is different but they may be the same fit?

Dorman makes one too.

I see original style is available on eBay.

I'm torn on spending 50 Cdn to the door for it. But I might have no choice if I want it to be white and un yellowed. The little clip I can probably figure something out. Perhaps convert the socket and bulb to a type 67 with LED (which I have 9 bulbs left over for another project.) But maybe you don't want a dome light to be super bright.

Oh, thanks for showing interest in my latest mundane subject!

Id say just about any gm from late 50s-70s, maybe more, would be the same dimensions. If I find my 62 one, Ill let you know.

This is in the 62 bubbletop I owned, how much does it look like yours? Except for the pattern on the plastic? I junked a 4 door and may have it somewhere, it would be good driver quality if I recaDSCF0024.JPGll and didn't sell it already.

I bet it's the same base Don. No screws, just 3 tabs in the roof fitting into 3 slots in the base. Twist the tabs.

I'm positive I have a spare some light lens for you, I'll take a look tonight. I also think I have a dome light housing somewhere, but no idea where.

I knew I had one or two kicking around - LOL.

Here's a small selection shot against a white background for comparison sake.   None have been cleaned, and the bottom right is probably the best.  Let me know if you're interested in taking one off my hands.

RE: Dome light. 65 wanted. Plus a convert to type 67 LED.

Converted the dome lamp to fit a Type 67 LED bulb.

Missing the center connector plastic, got the bulbs, and it's all kind of rough anyway. So why not try it...

d1.jpg

Have collected a ton of grommets over the years, and the one shown will do the trick nicely.

Had a bunch of steel test discs from my steel working days, and type 67 LED's leftover from the license lamp redo.

d3.jpg

d2.jpg

The base will need some relief cut for the grommet.

d6.jpg

Drilled a hole in the disc to fit the grommet. Used a step bit.

d4.jpg

d5.jpg

The tabs on the bulb hold it nicely from falling out of the grommet.

d7.jpg

Drilled some holes in the disc, and used tiny self tapping screws to mount it to the base raised portions. A little silicone adhesive between the two should keep them together forever. Zip cut the 2 screw points on back where they came out past the base.

Carefully Soldered two wires to the bulb itself, Then fitted it up through the grommet. Fits perfect and allows clearance between the lens and the roof panel above. I'll add a small connector to join onto the roof harness.

d8.jpg

It's ugly as is, but it works. Good and bright without the searing heat. The LED bulb as designed radiates down as well as to the sides, perfect for this application. Nice. Though not as bright as the sun as the phone image always seems to depict it.

You could do this yourself in a number of different ways. The one limitation is the clearance above to the roof. A full bulb socket might just crowd that. They probably make a retrofit kit as well now.
