Was it one of these old wives tales to improve performance?

When I was a kid, I remember older guys saying that putting mothballs in your gas tank improved octane, therefore improving performance. I never tried it.

Coke is high in sugar. Have read that sugar is not good for engines. Maybe another old wives tale.
