I'm not going to value that based on a picture of some emblems, spark plug wires and a gutted interior.

We know a finished 409 Pontiac will never approach a 409 Chevy but this has to be a $40,000 to $50,000 car on the market when done. Based on these limited photos one could easily spend that in restoration so it really comes down to how deep are your pockets and how bad you want the car.

And getting present condition of rust and motor, GM Vintage docs, and matching the 409 numbers to the car.

I'd like to see what's on the stamp pad. It looks like a 340hp motor. That's my guess.

Fishing?

Interesting car (to me anyway) if real.

So this intrigues me, yes paperwork is necessary but lets think about faking up a 409 Pontiac.....first off we know that there were about 30 340 HP cars made in the first place so that means that there were probably only 40 people in Canada who knew the car could be ordered this way, then you have to find a 409 to swap into the car, then you do that and leave it to rot. I don`t think the likelihood that this is a fake is very high.

Then if you are like me you go to your photo archives and get a photo that you persoanlly took of a 409 that is known to be original with the paperwork, post it here so all can compare with the photos of this car.

Hopefully the owner will acquire it. A small price to pay to substantiate a car like this.

Then there's the possibility that somebody swapped in a 409 out of a wrecked Chevy into a 283 Pontiac back in the sixties, used it as normal for years, and then it was neglected.  Not entirely unlikely as stuff like that used to happen quite a bit among hot rodders at the time (still does, for that matter).

The reason I posted a verified photo is we only have a snippet of the engine but it is clearly wearing Pontiac Valve covers just like the ones on the verified car. Carb set up and fuel lines appear similar if not identical. We already discussed this week the scarcity of engine dress up parts for the Pontiac 409 engine and things like decals and valve covers did come up. Chevy 409s had an embossed bowtie on the valve cover.

Here's another 64 original 409 from the photo archives, this one is  a scan of a photo, same valve cover with that raised rib running its length. Chevy did not use this and literally where else are you going to find these other than on a Canadian Pontiac 409.

By all means get the paperwork, its essential yet I was right last week on that "Original" Big Block Beaumont Custom being a 327 275HP car, just saying my detective work points me to say this is not faked. Just like Dr. Houseman says in Dirty Dancing, "When I'm wrong, I say I'm wrong" but in this case we will see.

Im with your thoughts here Ray, the only auto valve covers for a 409 were Chevy with the bowtie or Cdn Pontiac with no bowtie. This car looks very original, what we can see of it.

For full correctness, marine 409s had aluminum ribbed valve covers. Not sure what GM provided to a marine engine builder, as cooling manifolds, intake manifolds, exhaust manifolds, oil pan, and other components were unique to a marine engine.

Until the seller or buyer shows up, we wont have these questions answered.

BTW, it has bolts instead of screws holding down the valve covers like a 63; its a powerglide which was not available with high horse 409s (at least in 63)?It has a 409 4gc which has that fuel connector on the front pointing a bit down; glass fuel filter; seems a very original 409 340hp with power brakes and power steering.

GM paperwork can be done in the same day of you pay the extra charges . I had some done recently and it only took a few hours . Small investment to get proof.

I get all that, and you are probably correct (and I'm not trying to disprove your detective work).  Just saying that there could be other possibilities.  Until we know the facts (which we may never), it's all speculation.

If I were a betting man, though, I'd put my money on your speculation.

Never seen those covers Ray, very nice. Where can I get a set?

Marv in Ontario put a 409 in a Corvair, it has Mercruiser valve covers. These are old pics, you can find this car done, completely stock from the outside.

Maybe it's just the angle of the picture but to me the 2 carburetors look different as far as the fuel inlet area and the hot air for the choke.

Carl, twin carbs were Carter afb, single afb on the solid lifter 409s, 340hp were hydraulic lifter and a single large 4gc.

Doesn't the choke thermostat look different between these two?

The top pic is very greasy and a bit out of focus. That rubber hose laying where it doesnt belong also blocks the view in that area.

Was there a 409 truck engine or is that a whole different beast?

Yes there was a 409 truck engine. Low compression, different camshaft and 348 style cylinder heads and intake manifold.
