Curtis Customs, restoration shop near Halifax beware

Quite a list of people scammed. He had a 2 door 58 Pontiac wagon in his yard for years, wanted a lot of money for it and likely wouldnt sell it unless he did a restoration on it. I think he was restoring the contents of your wallet?

The only thing scarier than trying to find a good contractor is trying to find a good rod shop.  The only way to tell is, the smoother they talk, the rougher your experience is going to be.

I've passed this place a few times, without knowing the house of horrorssmile within.

For some reason I had thought this shop had already closed.  I seem to recall hearing stories like this about the place from a few years back, but maybe I'm thinking of another shyster?

Really disappointing to have had endorsements from people like Gene Winfield (which would have given the impression of credibility to the business) and end up like this. You could perhaps chalk up some of the stuff, like being short on money, to just being a poor businessman, but once you start ripping off customers (and selling parts off their cars??  Who does that?) you're just a crook.  I hope the guy goes to jail.

It sometimes surprises me how many dishonest people are in the hobby, but for some reason it seems to draw in the crooks and con artists as much as the honest people who just like the cars.

Too bad for those who lost money and cars - a black eye for the hobby to be sure.

Hes notorious for screwing over people. Friend of my father ordered parts for his car from him 15 years ago, took the money and never produced any parts. Complete dirt bag. Local guy that has a host of medical problems had his truck completed by them (through the help of a group of car guys) and they hacked the truck all to hell. Hed have a pair of cement shoes pretty damn quick if someone I knew was in that situation.

Gene Winfield should see about having his name removed from their business. I like Gene.

Gene might. He makes it out to The Atlantic National almost every year.

I sent a link to the article to Kustomrama that had posted an extensive biography of Gene Winfield. I asked if they could forward the story to whoever looks after Genes affairs. Gene Winfield is in his 90s now.

Just a complete nightmare story.  You get hooked up with the wrong person and look out!

I have been lucky so far, got some good references from some local Poncho members, then got some good references from that person for work.

Got a great lead on a independent metal guy for some work on my 78 C10..... so far so good.

That tall skinny guy down in Morris is OK too.......  lol

There are lots of snakes around, Im just surprised this guy survived as long as he did in a small market like here. There are lots of trades and businesses with snakes in them. If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, its a duck.

That's the problem ... small market. People get hard-up for finished car, and there are not a lot of resto shops.

PEI is even worse than NS on all fronts. Took us 5 years to find someone to side our 150 year old farm house ... they want to do cherry-jobs/new builds. Quick $$$.

Darryl is right. When we needed new windows, doors and gutters on our house we called several companies for estimates and only 1 showed up! That was about 4 years ago. It's worse now with the pandemic and the building boom here in PEI.

So wouldn't that mean that there is room for competition when the service providers start to pick and choose only the gravy jobs?

Seems to be a common problem these days. I gave up on getting a couple of jobs done because no one who said they would give me a quote ever showed up to actually do so.

There's lots of room for competition but there doesn't seem to be anybody with the initiative to do so. I know we're getting a bit off topic but I called my local optometrist hoping to get my prescription updated this Friday. Soonest they can see me is Oct 17!

I got the same song and dance from an insurance company here when looking for a quote for my truck. Blamed it on Covid. Likely didn't want to take time away from the pool to do some work!

I had a classic car expert rip me off here in oz. a 65 poncho. handed him a holden as part payment. Long story short, 10 months later with nothing done but terrible work and threats to keep the car.7 mates and a towtruck at 9pm at night got my car back. He called the police and accused me of theft. They said it was my car and I was quite  within my rights to come get it. Fortunately it was registered the full time so the next step was charging him with theft.

There was a new posting on Facebook the other day about another victim here in the Maritimes. Older gentleman took his car (late model) and wanted a scorpion airbrushed on his hood and a couple of little accents elsewhere on the car. Paid in full upfront. Wholly crap is all I can say (PG version). He went to pick up the car and was less than pleased. I think they quickly masked it out with tiny pieces of tape first because it was messed up something bad, then did highlights/ outline with a brush in red. I say brush as a loose term as it looked more like a toilet brush was used. Good god they are horrible. I do not have any pics of it because I am lazy right now, but I assume it would not be hard to find. STAY-A-WAY PEOPLE!
