Tired of gas, I bought a cordless walk behind.

After 17 years from my old gas mower, along with some recent troublesome carb issues and a broken pull cord just today, I gave up and went out and bought a cordless. My lawn is small, 20 minutes max.

The most expensive or elaborate this isn't, and when unboxing I actually laughed as it looked and felt like like a toy. After just getting back from cutting moderately deep, I can say this light and quiet little thing WAY exceeds my expectations, and actually cuts nicer than the gas mower. I used half the battery packs capacity. Time will tell how long it all lasts, but my lawn is an easy go.

I certainly could have bought a cheaper gas mower, but I bet in 5 years you'll be hard pressed to find a non commercial gas powered walk behind. The display at CT appears to already be about 50/50 gas/cordless. As the tech improves, these things will just get better, and I'm good with it! So long gas can..at least at home. Cheers!

Nice! I saw an electric ride on mower at the local tractor dealer the other day but a charge only lasts for 2 acres. I'd need 3 batteries to do my grass. I did however buy an Echo electric chainsaw after doing a ton of research on them. The Echo came out on top of all the major Chainsaw brands. It has exceeded my expectations as well. I've cut a ton of firewood with it. It's not any lighter than my gas saw but it's super quiet and no fuel mixing to worry about. You still obviously need chain oil.

I have a 120volt (plug-in) 16amp Troybilt chainsaw that I use around the property for small jobs. Works like a charm, and ya, you have to fill the reservoir with "cherry juice". It is lighter than a regular chainsaw, but needs an extension cord.

That's all you need for your lawn Mark.

I use a Yardworks gas-powered 173cc push mower for 3 hours each week to mow our lawn. It is now 15 years old!

I was so impressed with it's cutting power that I bought a second identical mower (on sale) 14 years ago, after my first mower's purchase. I have it as back-up, but have yet to use it. I guess I'm set for the phase-out of gas-powered equipment.smile

Yes, the electric powered world is fast approaching and looks like your purchase is our future.

I have been thinking about one as well as my lawn is quite small as well. I have an indestructable 5hp John Deere PZ14 which Deere typically overbuilds, or use to, is getting heavier every year to push around.

Great mower though, built in 1993, starts with 2 pulls but the electric powered tools / cars, etc will be the norm soon. I guess the JD will be a collectors item soon.

The battery takes around 2 hours from a complete discharge. Will last approx. 40 minutes fully charged depending on length of grass. I used it twice yesterday for around 20 minutes each time (did my neibours lawn), it discharged half way each time with no discernable power loss. Apparently it's load sensing, so it adds and reduces power as required. The battery has that common built in charge indicator. It's a smart charger, so the battery can be left on it without issue. A new battery is $179, so you can see where the cost of the machine is.

My wife calls it a Barbie lawn mower.

My Craftsman Tecumseh 6 1/2 H.P.  lawn mower after 20 years was giving me trouble starting so with enough Crappy Tire money to pay

for  two thirds  of a electric Yardman I went for it.That was five years ago. The Craftsman cuts a better lawn than the electric,

and the Craftsman bag held more grass than the electric. Emptying the bag is way more frequent and the grass has to be dry to cut.

Not as wide as the gas Craftsman, but coming with two batteries, it always has power to run. I mounted the charger in the garage wall

so there is always a battery being charged. One battery does the front and back yard with lots of power to spare. Always starts immediately.

At the time I bought it , 24 volts was the max for the lawn mower. I haven't seen the batteries losing any power over those five years.

As for the Craftsman, I passed it along to my son and it operated fine after viewing a youtube "secret fix" for these Craftsman mowers.

we tried it and it literally took a 10 minutes to get it running......(damn)

-G

Just cut the grass this morning....what I have and what I thought I had was two different things.

The electric is a Yardworks unit not Yardman, and the voltage is 36 v not 24......

....I've been working to hard......disbelief

I'm still using the Black & Decker plug in electric mower I bought when we built the house 23 years ago.  Still works like a champ and I have never had to change the oil, buy gas, store gas, drain gas out of the tank and carb in the fall, etc.  Don't have to worry about where/how I store it either, though it's starting to look a little rusty from storing it in my outdoors shed in our humid environment - nothing that a quick spray with some Tremclad won't fix, though, when I get a round tuit.

For small yard tools like this, I think electric makes the most sense, though I can see how gas mowers would still be the best bet for people with huge lawns that take 2 or 3 hours to cut.  That may change soon as more electric choices become available.

For my next mower, once my trusty B&D finally gives up the ghost (whenever that will be), I'm grappling with whether to get a battery powered mower or just get another plug in again.  The advantage of the battery mower is that you don't need to worry about the cord, which can be a pain in the butt when you are mowing but I pretty much have that dance mastered.  The disadvantage, I suppose, is having to deal with the battery, making sure it's always charged when you need it, and perhaps having to deal with a decreasing capacity as the battery ages, and eventually the lifespan of the battery and the cost of replacement.  Per George's comments above, it appears that battery degradation may not be an issue.

The plug in allows me to mow anytime I want to, unless there's a power failure (lol), and as long as the motor is good, it's good.  I suppose it also prevents me from mowing in the rain, but that's not a loss as I don't mow in the rain anyhow... we'll see how it goes - by the time I need a new one, the only choice may be battery powered...

Not one to be defeated, I went out today, took apart and re-attached the pull cord on the gas mower. Turns out it broke right at the knot in the reel. A little tricky to get the line back into the reel with the correct clock spring tension, but it's doable.

After the previous carb cleaning it fired up. It's a Tecumseh 6.5 with the series 11 carb (red primer bulb) on a 2004 Home depot Lawn boy. I never had one single issue with it until this year. The previous carb issues (no start) were likely caused by the float bowl gasket not sealing. Corrosion had gotten along the bowl to gasket mating surface, and the seal was lost (Ethanol corrosion I suspect). Priming the bulb, pressurizing the bowl, the fuel would not travel up the emulsion tube out to the venturi, and just pissed out the bowl sides. No start unless fuel was squirted down the throat. I cleaned everything up and blew it all out. Running, I adjusted the governor spring arm for a good running speed.

So now I have a spare mower. Oh well.

I bought an cordless weed eater last year. 40v system (2 20 volt batteries) and it does all the weedeating I need to do without running down.
My Poulon Lawn tractor is going on year 8 with a ton of hours on it and not a lick of trouble other than 2 flat tires. Even the belts are original. I run synthetic oil. We "might" upgrade to a zero turn 52" Toro next year now that I've seen how fast those things go!

I now have a 52" 3 blade ride on down in Gaspe', what used to take me an hour 20 on the old 42" I do now around 45 minutes. Next stop will be a zero turn.

The neighbour got a zero turn Husky a couple years ago. It wasnt cheap but it is fast and cuts well. One caveat on the zero turn mowers: they do not like side hills. I know, youre supposed to go straight up or down even on a regular lawn tractor, but much more of an issue on the zero turn. The neighbour very nearly flipped his the first time he used it. I think he got the hang of it a bit, but mostly he just learned to mow only up-down.

I was at Rosenort Motors in Manitoba yesterday and they had a 21 inch self propelled walk behind Snapper mower, 82 volts, two batteries packs, side and rear discharge and bagger for $775.  82 volts?  I wonder when they will hit 110?

So, I couldn`t resist looking this thing over and this unit has some beef to it. The deck is some type metal and although not as heavy as gas powered unit, it definitely was heavier than some of big box store units.

Adjustable throttle and get this, the electric motor had a Briggs and Straton sticker on the electric motor.

Thats a beast! Nice machine, completely non Barbie.

One battery does the blade, the other the drive?

Fyi, they're actually making a 125 volt cordless right now.

Mark, I've had a Greenworks 60 volt leaf blower for 2 years now and love it. Use it here for snow on the driveway and at the cabin for the decks and walking paths. If your mower is 1/2 as good as our blower you'll love it!

How are the Toro Zero Turn mowers on fuel? I got thinking about this yesterday at the gas station while paying over $1.40 for super to fill my gas can. My little tractor takes 2 tanks to cut my lawn and about a quarter to half tank to cut the grass around the outbuilding. I'd say I use about 20 liters every 2 weeks (based on cutting the grass once a week)

not sure on the gas ones. My Kubota Z18 has an 18 hp diesel that sips fuel. That said the cost between a gasser and diesel motor is crazy. I dont think you would ever recover that cost on fuel savings. The Kubota is just under 900 hrs. It came with the house. When the time comes to replace it I think I will be looking at a gasser
