2 409’s at auction in Manitoba August 13- Pontiac?

Valve covers have no Chevy bowtie, one likely car, maybe 380hp solid lifter, the other may be industrial or truck.

I am sure that they are both truck engines. One has the high fan big truck water pump and the other has a vacuum governor on the carburetor. Also Canadian GMC truck engines didnt have the bow tie on the valve covers.

Casting number 3788068 is listed as a 1962 409 passenger car casting number and in 62 those blocks were only built as solid lifter 380 hp single carb and 409hp dual carb. Definitely has truck stuff attached so would have to check out everything for correct heads and block, huge difference in value if the casting number posted is correct.

I would like to see the deck stamp on that block. It wouldnt be the first time I have seen a service replacement car block in a truck. Also it states that the casting number 3788068 is the same bock as 3798962 that was a service replacement truck block. It wouldnt be too much of a surprise if GM used up existing stock to fill a parts order.

Apparently the casting number is correct. It could be valuable if someone was building a 62 or 63 409 car.

3857656 is the '64-'65 passenger car block, one of which sits between the control arms in my '62 Impala.  3788068 is what SHOULD be in my car; it's the '62-'63 passenger car casting.

Not sure what the differences are.

The truck had reduced compression via a notch at the top of each cylinder. That can be good with todays readily available parts to build a big horse drag stroker motor with new pistons, heads, and intake. And the truck block being cheaper to buy, the last castings built were the strongest, those from 64-65.

Correction, Im told by the us guys both of these blocks could be truck so this is likely a truck block Paul, as it appears to be.

Even if they are truck blocks you would need to pull the heads to see what you have. A friend of mine likes to build the truck blocks with a blower so the low compression isnt a problem. Some have one notch, some have two notches. It doesnt matter what the casting number is, it depends what it was originally built for. Also the big trucks 409 use the 348 style heads and intake manifold with the smaller intake ports.
I might be having a brain fart here, I cant remember if its the 348 or the 409 truck that has two notches

The early truck heads were 2 notches, until maybe 1960 or 61ish, then a single notch. Some of the later truck heads can be used to make good hp, a buddy had 1 dyno at 380 hp, a double notched truck block with the good truck heads.

Agree Paul 100%, youd need to see casting numbers on the heads to see if they are the good ones, then the block condition is the usual question mark- how good or bad is it, cracked, etc. The 348/409 are in high demand, these will likely sell for more than they are worth. I dont see any/many ever for sale in Canada , let alone my area, and dont follow them on eBay.

I agree Don that they dont show up for sale often. I have a 348 in the garage that was for sale on Facebook only 20 km from me. The stamp shows its from a 1960 car with a turboglide. I think its from a Pontiac as it has plain valve covers. Its not seized and the price was right. It should be a good rebuilder.
