DANGER! DANGER! MOPAR Content: 1 of 2 1970 Coronet R/T Hemi 4 Speed Convertibles

I have to admit I enjoy watching Graveyard Carz now that there isn't the stupid drama from the first 2 or 3 seasons.

In this episode they install the HEMI into the car from the bottom like the factory did. It's a tight squeeze.

This car was actually found in the 1980's in a Montreal junk yard and was a basket case. The current owner sent it to GYC to the mistakes

made during it's original restoration fixed. It's also interesting to see how tight that Ramcharger system is under the hood!

Why isn't there a show where guys restore GM cars to this caliber??

There was a 1969 Charger Daytona here that went for auction about 15 years ago. It wasnt rusty but had horrible paint but low mileage. It was a one owner and the elderly owner had it auctioned off. It sold for $100,000 approximately, a crazy number we thought for one needing restoration. I found out after that it was a very early car and the first one sold in Canada!

That Daytona would likely be worth 3 times that now.

I think probably more than that now it has been restored, due to its history. If I remember correctly it was a Toronto Auto Show car at the Chrysler display and was purchased by our local Dodge dealership. When the auction took place you could by a nice Daytona for about $125,000 US dollars. At the time it looked like crazy money for that car.

I figure $100,000 is almost what is being asked for very nice examples of average muscle cars now, so super rare cars like Daytonas would have to be like two or three times that now.

I used to have an issue of "Northern Wheels" in the 1980's which had an article profiling a guy in Alberta who had some of the rarest Mopar's built. I wonder what ever became of him and the cars?
I think the article was titled "Elephant Man"

Gotta say that a 1970 Coronet R/T convertible would be pretty much my holy grail car, if I ever won a lottery.  Hemi or not, they hold a special place for me, with something like only 296 made overall.

Back in the 1980s, when I had my '70 Coronet, I found a '70 R/T convertible that was originally Plum Crazy (purple), 440 auto, white interior.  Found it while driving through the back roads of NS, stopped in to ask about it.  The story was that the owner was in jail, but would probably sell it for around $4000.  I looked it over, but found it was very rusty and needed basically everything.  It had been painted black at some point and had rust and bondo popping out of it everywhere (it was left outside in humid Maritime conditions).  I was still a student at the time, and didn't have the time, facility, or money to dive into such a big project, added to the complications of buying a car from somebody who was in jail, and decided to pass on it.  Don't know whatever happened to the car - I had heard that a few years later or so, somebody in the city had bought it and was going to restore it, but didn't hear any more of it over and above that.  Have never seen it since that day in rural NS.

Anyhow, that's my story for the day...

Yeah that was quite the collection and all very well documented.  I think he had one of each available color.
