It is too bad the older cars (2012-2021) can not be retro fitted.

It's amazing how many Ghost Cars are out there running around the roads.

The ones on the highways, in the predawn fog, are the scariest.

It's simple enough to wire up a relay to power up the headlights with the key. On our daughter's 09 Buick Allure something went wrong with her setup and I couldn't narrow down why the lights wouldn't come on like they used to. I just wired in a relay that turns them on as soon as she starts the car. That was likely a year and a half ago and it's worked fine.

How and why did this ever start in the first place ? Dash lights only came on with the headlights before.

About time. Worse north of the 49th because of the longer stretches of darkness with lots of traffic, but it's a curse down here, too. Even though there is no daytime running light requirement. How can the dash lights be one with the headlamp switch "off", either manually or using a photovoltaic cell? That would mean that they're on ALL the time, even at high noon.

I was an early adopter of this. Back in around 1990 when I had my 70 Biscayne I found a cheap device at a surplus store that turned the healights on with the key and it had a delay when you shut off the car (which was adjustable) . It worked great other than having people shout "YOU LEFT YOUR LIGHTS ON!"  when I was walking away from the car lol

I always drive with my headlights on. I think it makes a big difference being seen during the daytime.

As for your comments about daytime running lights a friend of mine drove transport for years through the States. He had a new truck when daytime running lights became law. He was at a scale in Georgia and was asked to turn off his headlights. The officer at the scale couldnt believe that he couldnt turn off the headlights. He hadnt heard of daytime lights and thought it was really strange.
