1956 fuel tank advice

Hi folks, just recently acquired a 1956 Chieftain  2 dr hardtop, fuel tank is rough, has had two patches, needs a third patch, I am not seeing any OEM replacement, I had thought about chev replacement and move filler tube? Would appreciate any advice. Thanks for adding me to the group much appreciated!

Have you considered having one made? A guy I work with had an aluminum one fabbed up for a scout he's doing. It looks great, and fits well. Can't remember the cost though.

Welcome to this active site.

Since you already have the tank out could you scout a few radiator repair shops for a quote.  They would have the equipment necessary to get rid of any fumes before attempting a repair.  Calgary isnt that far away.

Check your local CAA for recommendations.

The 55 and 56 Pontiac gas tank should be the same. The only change was the gas tank door went from opening at the bottom to opening from the side. Check pictures of a 55 chevrolet tank and compare to yours . A 56 Chevrolet tank will be different as the filler tube goes behind the tailight. I will check part numbers this pm to verify that the Americian tank is the same as a Canadian tank.

The Canadian part number for the tank is 3710907. The Americian part number is 519115.

The filler tube also have different part numbers

Canadian 5847182

Americian 521717.

I would still compare a Canadian tank to your tank as the rear sections of the car are pretty much identical except for the Star chief which is longer.

Thanks Cliff, I did chat with one local rad shop, by the time they get it cleaned, repaired sealed, its almost the cost of a new tank, but it could be just this shop is a little pricey

All shop prices are pretty close to the same. If the tank is rotted just save your self some future problems and get a new one. The only difference I can speculate on the between the American and Canadian tanks is the size.

We have a shop here in oshawa called

Gas Tank Renu and has been in business more than 20 years.

info@gastankrenu.com

They show American locations which you might be able to get to easily.

They repair then put a sealer liner inside as I understand

Por 15 Gas Tank Sealer is another consideration if you just repair it.

Thanks gang for the advice, in talking to a local rad shop, looking cost of new tank, either case 300 - 500 bucks, I am going to try muriatic acid, pull the dents and solder some patches on there, this weekend. If it actually turns out okay I will try and find a new sending unit and re-install as is. I tried vineger some nuts n bolts, but did very little, time for tougher measure, I will let ya know how it goes!

Was watching the Moonshiners program and they sourced some old whiskey barrels to make their mash in

Cut a 3 inch hole in the top of the barrel and formed a 3 inch copper pipe which they soldered up

Stuck it into the barrel and on examination decided it needed a touch more solder!

BANG.... MASSIVE EXPLOSION!!!

Fortunately only small burns.

The copper tube was completely flattened out of shape.

Mixing fumes and solder doesnt mix.
