Getting the next generation involved. '61 Apache Style...

So I was a little shocked when our 18 turning 19 year old boy (who always lusts over the rice rockets and super cars) asked how we would feel if he bought an old truck

Despite the conversations that he would have to wait u till he was 21 to get some insurance for it so he could drive it, he went forward and with our support purchased a 1961 c10 Apache.  he went to work and had the rear gears changed from 3:92 to 3:38 and added power steering. he installed a rear bumper and some original stainless bling.

Thanks to Covid-19, the two years made it easy to wait things out with no shows.  He is getting near 21 now so we decided to pull it out and under my insurance (and him riding passenger) we have begun to drive it more to discover it smoking out the downdraft tube and low compression in cylinder six.

I am pretty proud that at 20 years old he was not discouraged and was super stoked to rip the motor out and take it apart to see what is going on and do it over.

Good on Him coming over! What a great looking truck. Perfect runner for learning and working on as it gets driven.

Plus one to what Mark said, exactly my thoughts. Such a cool truck. Good for him and SO good to be a dad when you have a kid like that!

Fabulous. Certainly, making mechanical things work better is a more fulfilling pastime, IMHO, than winning tokens in a cyberspace video game. My compliments to his parents!

Id like to repeat all of the above. That chrome front end really looks good and that is a neat truck.

And with some guidance and little help he got the engine out. Does anyone know anything about the three speed transmissions with overdrive.  He loves the six with three in the tree I think mostly because he can drive it while everyone his age looks at him like he has two heads when he talks about it.  It would be nice if we could locate one and drop it in so he can get some better fuel economy and hopefully promote some more show involvement when the show seasons get going again

My suggestion for the overdrive would be to locate the 66 or newer model because it has a syncronized 1st gear. The earlier ones do not. They were not sold in Canada so you'll have to go south to locate one most likely.

Now that I think of it, I sold one to a friend years ago. I know he never used it, I could check if he still has it if you like. At one point I had 3 of them that I'd collected on trips to US wreckers but I can't recall where I sold the other 2.

Well we seem to have found the main problem... cylinder six, upper spit right in the centre.

Looks like you have a great father/son project ahead...

This is a picture of our front door. I had to chuckle when I saw the picture above. We have similar tastes obviously!

Thanks, I am looking forward to do this with him. We just recently demoted our to shop carpets as we changed the floor in the house and they no longer work.
