Correct fluid for convertible top pump..

Greetings All :

Just a general question for the Pro's here.....

I have a '66 Pontiac Parisienne Custom Sport convertible project well under way. For this convertible top pump assembly, how do I tell if takes brake fluid, or ATF fluid in the reservoir ? Some say that in the year 1966, it may have come from the Factory in Oshawa with either fluid, and just trying to clarify how you can tell the difference ?

Also, there is supposed to be a specific procedure for bleeding air from the pump and lift / close cylinders. Can anyone suggest where I would find instructions for the proper procedure ? These instructions may be in a 1966 Pontiac Parisienne Shop Manual, but unfortunately I do not own one of those yet.....

Any answers to these questions would be greatly appreciated Folk's, as always !

Jim the High Gear Guy.

You should be able to feel the difference between brake fluid and ps steering fluid. Probably best to switch it to ps fluid if it has brake fluid in it since brake fluid with remove paint and cause rust. I think all these gm convertible cylinders used the same method for bleeding and filling the cylinder so if you have any shop manual, check there.

Did my 65 awhile back. Bought new cylinders as the old ones were cactus. Seals crook, corroded. Used dexron fluid. What was advised when I bought new ones. Won't cover under warranty orherwise. I have a 66 body by fisher manual which has it. If you email me on pclarke63@tpg.com.au i can scan the pages you need and send them.

I think brake fluid was history by the 1959 models or maybe earlier ? I owned a '59 Impala convertible from new & it had power steering fluid

My 66 has brake fluid. Im sure I read somewhere in the literature that was the requirement.

I worked on a couple of GM cars when I was an apprentice and there was a sticker use ATF only on the convertible top pumps. This was in the mid seventies, so the cars were probably late sixties or early 70s.

There was no pump or oil in the system when I bought my 65, so I never knew what the original fluid was. I assumed trans fluid so that's what I used in back in 2005 and have not had any issues
