Not a Poncho but had to share

66DA8ADE-B2B8-4DE6-A6FD-F6C8DFF96334.jpegCool old 1962 Chrysler Newport Enforcer, said to be a one year model with the 383/325

Real car not a clone, kinda followed me home so speak, although not a Canadian Pontiac.

But as a gear head it worked for me lol, thought you fellows would have a chuckle.

Pictures are when in California, but now here in Calgary.35E5311A-DD8D-49BA-8DF0-5BE87541330E.jpeg

Unsure if it was available in Canada, around 1000 or so built!

According to factory specs ones built for California were a little beefier for high speed take downs etc.

This was found and restored back in 2006 by a member of the CHP, according to documentation it was unit #6910 when in service.

Apparently I can request the service history on the car, unsure if that's correct but going to contact the member who restored it and find out, that would be cool for sure.

Maybe just maybe he may know of a Pontiac police packaged unit, one can only wish...

Really like the looks of this one. I guess highway patrol had no roof light?

I'm jealous! I love the old Mopar cop cars. Did the police cars get the "Astradome" instrument cluster (by far the coolest cluster ever)?

Very very cool!  I have a thing for old Mopar cop cars, and ex-CHP are at the top of the list for me.

At first it would seem odd that they would have a cop car made from a Chrysler rather than a low line Plymouth, but I remember reading that the CHP had a minimum wheelbase requirement of 122 inches, and Dodge/Plymouth lost their full size cars for 1962, so the Chrysler Enforcer, based off the Newport model, was created.  Apparently they could even be ordered with a 3-speed manual on the floor (apparently the Astra-Dome instrument panel covered too much of the column to be able to have a column-mounted shifter).

Also, I see it has the CHP-required white steering wheel, apparently all CHP cars were ordered with white steering wheels to keep them cooler in the hot California sun.  Not sure of the start and end years, though I've seen pics of a 1971 CHP Polara with a white wheel.

Would love to see more pics!!

The RCMP, OPP, and QPP, as well as our municipalities, stuck to the lowest-priced brands, back in the day - I don't think I ever recall seeing even a Pontiac or a Monarch police cruiser. But there were Chryslers, Mercurys, Oldsmobiles, and even AMC Javelins used stateside by the various State patrols and county mounties, although I think the big cities pretty much stuck to the "taxi cab" formula.

One of the Alabama State Highway Patrol Javelins was up for sale, a while ago. Powered by a 401, with a gumball on the roof.

Great find! One of those late '50s Mercury Montereys that the CHiPs used would be neat, too.

Yup, there were Pontiac police vehicles used in Canada:

I think the key point about the Chrysler is that Chrysler Corp. miscalculated the market, thinking that the low-priced brands of other makers were going to go back to the standard sizes that were common in the mid 1950s, so for 1962 they put the Dodge and Plymouth 'full size' brands on B-body (mid sized) platforms.  Knowing that some police forces (including CHP, a major customer for the police fleet market) had a 122" wheelbase requirement, they created a budget police package based on the only large car they had left, which was the Chrysler brand (DeSoto was gone after 1961).  Realizing their mistake, they brought back the full size body in the Dodge line for 1963, the 880, and for the 1965 new generation, all 3 of the Chrysler Corp. brands had full size platforms again.
