Lost the McGard key. Anyone go through replacing it?

Doing a friends snows and in a seniors moment, probably left the key on the lug. Gone.

I see they have a replacement portal.

Anyone ever done it? Was it a smooth transaction?

Mark, (the senior)

Mark....Take a 1" cold chisel, a 5 lb sledge hammer. Set the chisel on the middle, one GOOD shot with the sledge should open that McGard forever. THAT'S how quick it was to steal a set of quality wheels with a McGard lock!!!

These locks will take a pounding with the air gun, not a cold chisel. Also after changing the wheels a few times, winter snows etc, the keyway gets worn and the key won't fit enough to grip the lock with excess clearance.

Take the lock and throw it away, buy matching nuts....end of story

This is exactly what I'm going to do! Then just buy 4 standard lug nuts. Thanks so much George!

I used them on my old Accord as I left the key on the lock and drove away.   They work great, but it's a bear getting the locking lug nut out of the remover.

You're right, and they're only at 90 FT/lbs.

Clint is right about sometimes getting the locking nut out of the socket can be a problem.

I found that propping the remover socket on it's edges on top of a open vise and using the 1/2 inch drive hole

to inserting an almost 1/2 piece of steel in the drive hole, a couple of good whacks with a hammer on the steel piece

and the locking nut will come out. There are 4 removal sockets in the set, try using one that's closest to the lock size.

I use it at PnP to remove wheels that have locks or stripped nuts.

In the junk yard it's an issue because there aren't any places to secure the remover socket, but with a vise at home it shouldn't be.

To remove the lugnut from the socket, I think I used a vise-grip on the lug nut, and a breaker bar on the socket. Put both on the floor and was able to remove the socket.

Just put the nut back on the stud but not tight. Then twisted it off with pliers or some vice grips.

Ive used old sockets just bigger then the locking units. Bang them on with a sledge. Twist then off with a big Johnson bar.
