1972 Lemans 4 door on kijiji MB, 49,000 miles

Ad says it was a 49,000 mile barn find that was bought at an auction.  A little searching brought up the auction result, which looks like a great deal at $3400: https://pennerauctions.hibid.com/lot/66382542/1972-pontiac-lemans?q=lemans&cat=true&SortOrder=0

Here's the kijiji ad.  He wants a little bit more (flip, I assume), but it still looks like a reasonable deal if it's as good as it looks.

At 5800 it sure looks like a no brainer for someone wanting into the hobby.

Wash it and go.

I noticed that the pics that are hosted on the auction site are larger with more resolution, so for fun I tried to get a better look at its condition.

When you zoom in on certain sections it looks like there is some gravel road (or winter stone) chipping damage (and resultant rust) on the lower quarters, rear wheel arches and lower doors.  The fenders look like they are bubbling out in the usual places as well. Looks like the rocker trim has been screwed on as well.

What I can't tell is if it's just surface rust or if there has been some bondo applied and a re-spray, which leads to a question:  At the factory, were the latches installed before painting or after?  If after, then the paint on the screw head and latch would be a giveaway - but then the decal doesn't look like it has been masked.

The auction price looks like a no-brainer, but the kijiji price would make me want to put it on a lift and give it a good lookover.  For others, perhaps it's just pocket money, though, so maybe I'm just being picky.

As an aside, I noticed the seller has a bunch of other miscellaneous items for sale, so I suspect they scan the auctions and yard sales and re-sell for profit.  No matter, it's theirs to do with as they wish.  It does make me want to watch more closely in the future to see if I can get back into the hobby by finding a car at the original price before it makes it to the re-seller...

In the good old days (1986ish for me) you could buy cars like these for next to nothing. I bought a 71 Skylark Custom 4 door sedan for $450 from the original owners son. 60-something thousand miles. Black, green interior. 350 Auto with positraction and doggie dish hubcaps. It even had the bright trim on the door frames. You can see it in the background in this photo.

I'd summer drive it and winter store it, if the frame and floors are solid.  It would be my 'take to cruise night and show 'n' shine' car.  Too nice for winters, not to mention that on the east coast it would crumble to pieces after a winter or two. With that minty interior and some rust/paint touch-up it would be good to go.  Plus you never see these, especially 4 doors.

I was just musing about price vs condition.  Decent deal, even with the seller's profit if it's only surface rust.  Not so great if it's full of bondo and the underside is rotten.

Though I think we have been conditioned by covid prices such that anything below $40K is a deal...  biggrin
