What Happens When You're Covided in at -40 after Christmas

The triple whammy! So you start watching youtube a lot, especially posts by people who seem to be having more fun that you are.

After watching a few guys do long distances on these I stupidly and impulsively took a quick look on Kijiji and found this time capsule that is now in my garage.

The only problem is that since Christmas especially I might be violating the old bikers rule of thumb that you shouldn't weigh more than the motorbike you're riding.  Handling suffers and the ridicule  factor is very high. This would explain why most guys my age and build are riding Harleys.   Oh well I have a few months to try to at least match the bikes weight.

The mileage of this 1980 model is in klicks and looks unaltered so this is quite the little time capsule, The only thing I can see wrong is a bit of rust in the tank. Any good suggestions  for rust removal, guys?

That's cool! I wouldn't mind something like that for bombing around my property.

Those things will carry you. Maybe not quickly, but they're a tank. I remember doubling on ours back in '73, through some pretty rough trails. Never let us down. That one looks in great shape. I see it's had the headlight bucket replaced, otherwise, it looks in excellent shape. Crazy what they're asking for those now.

Is that the 90, or the 110? Does it have HI-LO range? I don't see the shift lever, but I can't remember for sure where it was. A little slide lever, but I can't remember which side it was on.

Ken, great bike!. I think there are plenty of commercially available fuel tank rust removal and coating products.

You can get POR through Amazon.ca now, so might be the easiest to obtain. I've also seen quite a few home remedies as well.

POR rust remover, and tank coat.

Thanks guys I should have mentioned this is a 1980 Trail 110. It was first year they upped the displacement from 90 and  the one year they didn't have the high low range but according to the guy who sold it to me it has a really low first couple of gears. As far as I know black is correct for the headlight bucket. It sure does look original anyway. Its just missing the mirrors and the 110 callout decal which I will procure shortly. Heres a shot of a 1980 Trail 110.

First I'm trying to get the wife and stepson to finally learn to ride. It has no clutch but rather a  centrifugal clutch setup so it's super easy to learn on.

Then, Todd if you buy it from me I'll ride it out to ya! That would be fun!

The headlight bucket (plastic) on our 1972 CT90 was orange, until I broke it and the replacement was black. I always assumed any bike with the black housing had received a replacement, but I can see how it may have been the stock colour of newer models.

Very cool!  I used to drool over Z50s and ST90s when I was a kid, watching other kids zip around on them at campgrounds and local riding spots.  My folks weren't well off, so I couldn't expect them to buy me one, though Dad did get us kids a used "Easy Rider" minibike with a Tecumseh single cylinder (lawnmower engine) to share.  It was fun to zip around the yard until the centrifugal clutch would fall apart (it was a little clapped out).  Then we'd put it together again and it would be good for a little while.

I saved my paper route and summer job money up, but couldn't bring myself to spend it on a mini bike as I wanted a car much more.  So I bought a Beaumont at age 15!  Was too young to get my license so I just worked on it for a year until I realized it was a little too far gone to put on the road, but it was good experience nonetheless.

Seeing these old bikes really brings me back, though.

Found this on the net.  Ours would have been the one in the upper left, I think (it was a lot of years ago):

I did a similar thing. Bought a UK built Ford Model Y for £2-10 shillings from a local vicar's son. Wanted to make it a hot rod but I couldn't even get it to run. Ended up paying the 10 shillings to have it taken away!

I wonder what other craziness has tempted guys like us lately? What I tell my wife is that that Honda may be an impulse buy but at least those are getting smaller than they used to be!

That is a spare detachable gas tank. It was provided on mine along with a back passenger seat that you could attach to the rear rack.  It could hold about a gallon and was used to extend the range in countries that had long distances between refueling stops, I assume.  I haven't really researched if that was offered on the European or other countries models to tele the truth but I am finding out more about these all the time. I really like the swiveling front handle clamp that enables you to store the bike in a very skinny space.

The swivelling handlebars are also very handy if you carry the bike on front bumper-mounted tire cradles.

Neat stuff.  Looks like it has a steering lock too?  I'm assuming that's what the key cylinder looking thing is...  smile

I assume that's what it is. I haven't tried it yet but with a bike this light you could just about pick it up and carry it off if you wanted to steal it.

Yes, my ST90 has a very similar looking steering lock on it.

LOL... maybe it would cut down on joyriders, though, except for the ones who want to ride in tiny circles... biggrin

As I recall, these still weighed in about about 240 lbs (wet). Not a trivial amount when it lands on top of you in a ditch, and I know I wouldn't be carrying it too far. I was always surprised at just how heavy the damn thing was.

Someone tried to steal ours once, dragging the front wheel sideways every 10 feet or so to keep it going straight. They gave up after about 100 feet.

That's great to know! Maybe I'm not too heavy for it after all!

I have this little guy in the shed. It's a Bridgestone Chibi 60cc. !972-3 I think... I had it running last year and promptly fell off it. I should sell it before I break something.
