Can you tell me what this gizmo is?

Its on the wall at a local craft beer pub, they dont know what it is, do you? Looks like that figurehead on the left gets pulled down which causes the cog to go up to the teeth on the wheel? Some form of electric clock?

Interesting, none the less.

How is it powered? Looks like radio tubes ?

Interesting.  I wonder where they got it?

And, more importantly, which craft beer pub is it?  Big fan of craft beer here - always looking to try out new brews.

Saltbox in Mahone Bay.

It has old wiring and tubes and no power to it now. I wondered if it was put together as a joke? All kinds of soldering and some kind of diodes.

Ah yes.  Been there, but don't remember seeing this, but then it was a few years ago, before the pandemic anyhow.  Seems to me I favoured their Make and Break IPA or (DIPA?).  Their Balsam Blue looks interesting.  Garrison made a spruce beer a few years back that basically tasted like drinking a tree... lol.

I'm curious about the device... the more I look at it the more it does look like something tossed together as a conversation piece.  The gear on the rod looks like it's plastic or nylon - and does it contain an electric motor? Otherwise, what does it do?  Hmmm...

The big brass gear reminds me of something you'd see in a boat's wheelhouse but I'm not really a nautical guy.  Or maybe a large clock gear?  If it's a conversation piece, then it's doing its job!  wink

Don,

I  don't think the gear and the vintage looking brass handle and the tubes are related (maybe they are)

but the tubes are definitely a piece of electronic history.

That looked like a simple electric motor running off maybe 12 volts, like maybe this thing is a put together  something.

That's cool info, George.  Thanks for posting it.  Nice little explanation on how tubes work as well, which I had always wondered but never did investigate.

Don,

I was looking closely at it and I noticed behind the tube with the letter "E"

the imprint on the tube had a "BM"...... so could it be IBM ?

A couple of searches on IBM tubes led me to a few sites where the pictures came up.

The big brass piece has a few clues on it. There are numbers  stamped (12 at the top) and  they go

counter clockwise  opposite to a regular clock. So definitely some kind of time piece.

I'm thinking maybe (with all the holes) it's a combination clock/calendar and the brass handle piece

stuck in the tubes was  a handle that you pull like on a cuckoo clock....or may it's not even related.

The small gears look like they could mate with the teeth in the large brass piece.

I think this piece may be older than a hundred years......still searching.

In any case Don, I enjoyed trying to find the answer...great mental stimulation....

now I'll have to do my chores on another day. no

-G

You impressed me, I knew it was from the tube era, which for car radios was around 1963, the other thing we have in common.

Don, I would think the tube information should get you a free pint from the Craft Brewery.

One of these days we'll make to N.S. to visit my son-in-laws folks and maybe we can meet at the Saltbox for a brew.

The brass looks like an index wheel from a vintage clock gear cutting machine.

I was there and stocked up during our visit to you for the 283. Bought some Jeezus Murphy (my Wife's name is Murphy). I'm actually a dark ale/stout guy.

Yes, it does look like an old computing device. I remember seeing something similar on TV before.

They do a stout as well as a special stout aged in oak rum barrels. They get the used barrels from Lunenburg Distillery, they age their rum in barrels stored on boats moored in the harbour which keeps the barrels moving.
