A new place to post your vintage shots...with some rules.

Guys,

Seems there might be some pent up demand here to post vintage images again. I know I loved doing it and miss it. The site used to have a long running and very large archive of really great photos. Unfortunately due to copyright fears, and the emergence of image search bots who's function is to search out copyrighted images, providing material that groups could possibly use to extort the thread had to be deleted. This all owing to a real potential risk to the site owner. I know it sounds crazy, but it has happened.

We think it's possible have an vintage image thread again, provided some rules are followed. It would also nice at the onset to keep it Canadian or Commonwealth in content as much as possible.

So, at least at the get go, here's some rules that might make posting them safe:

Try to keep the images vintage and transportation related as much as possible.

Canada or Commonwealth images can be of anything vintage.

Must include a Canadian Pontiac or a Canadian built item if other than from Canada or Commonwealth.

Must be images publicly available without copyright.

Can be your own images or others with permission.

All images posted should have at a "Credit to" in the description.

Also, try to include a link to the original image in the description if at all possible.

Keep the images to a reasonable size.

If you're not sure of it being public, don't post.

Todd, or moderators reserve the right to delete without prior notice as to what we deem as any questionable or offensive image.

Suggestions and improvements are always welcomed.

Thanks, Mark

Interesting. What are these bots you mention ? That scenario sounds crazy.

The large companies that hold the rights to copyrighted images (Getty for example) hires people and uses algorithms ("bots") to check websites to see if they are using images without permission. If found they request large sums of money as "fines" for using the images. They persist even after the images are removed. Some sites get hit for thousands of dollars in these "fines".

Thats nuts. But I guess infringement is rampant.

In this case it's more like extortion, and from what I've read it's questionable whether these companies even have rights to all the photos that they are trying to collect on, but they are preying on small business owners, private bloggers and website owners who don't have money for a legal battle and thus will settle out of fear.  Also, it seems unclear as to whether their cases would be successful if taken to court.  Canadian copyright laws seem to indicate that it would be hard for them to get a victory in Canadian courts (from a layman's point of view), but who wants to test it?

That said, it's good practice for Canadian Poncho to play it safe and have these requirements.  It would take a bunch of time, and some money, to fight it.  Not worth the effort IMHO.  Yet another thing that sours me on the internet, but that's another tangent totally... lol

Love the Maple Leaf Gardens building.  It's very stylish and a Toronto icon.  The only time I went there was for a Leafs game in 1985, but I'm glad I had the chance to see it in its original form.

I'm glad it has been saved and repurposed, though.  Haven't been in it since, but I think it would be cool doing your grocery shopping at centre ice...

Can this be "Vintage"? Hard to believe almost 13 years ago. Ah, the good old days!

This is one of my favourite Halifax Muncipal Archives photos.  It shows a '67 Grande Parisienne with a 1968 sticker on the plate, so a 1 year old GP.  It also has a Beacon Pontiac badge on the trunk, which is where my Dad worked back then.  The location of the pic is somewhere in the downtown of Halifax.  There's quite a bit of dust on it, so it may have been sitting for awhile - it looks like it may be on a used car lot.  There was a lot of construction going on in the downtown at that time, which could account for the dust accumulation.

Cool pic, Todd!  Yeah, I am at the point where I am looking at photos that I took that I would now consider to be "vintage"... sigh...

Is that 427Carl's car next to yours?

That's a 67 Grande in your Halifax shot Mark. I know these things lol!

Anyways, I think if it's your own shot, there should be no need to provide any link to it, just maybe add "Personal image" or the like at the bottom. As far as archived shots, to avoid page clutter, if possible you need just provide at minimum a single link to it, not all the multiple paths and credits. If you can't link, then credit.

I have a bunch of saved images, but I have only a faded memory of where they came from. Most are from newspaper or civic archives, but I'm only going to post the ones I'm reasonably sure are public. If you see me post an image with only a credit but no link it's just that I feel they are safe. I think we here can all agree to use a reasonable common sense approach if you have stored images you'd like to post.

Good job so far! I'll delete this post after a bit.

Duh... I don't know how I did that.  I do know the differences between a '66 and a '67... biggrin  Post edited.

I'll clean up the links as well.  When I first added what I thought was a source link, it just took you to the search page, so I added the direct link.  The site states to add a retrieval code and credit to HRM archives, so that explains the text.  But maybe just a link would suffice, as the archives aren't coming after anybody for extortion money...

Thought so.  It's been a while since I've seen pics.  I hope Carl is doing alright.  I see he still checks into the board every now and then.

CN buses from 1940.  Not sure of the story here, but definitely a rail theme going on with them.  It looks like there may be wheels to run on the rails that are in the retracted position in this photo.

I'm not sure what the rights are for posting this photo, so I'll only post a link to it.  It's the General Motors Of Canada building in Oshawa in the early 1950s.

This would be quite an event as Canada would have been completely running steam engines at this point.
