Convertible rear speaker

Recently saw a picture of a 1970 catalina convertible with a speaker in the middle of the rear seat back. Did not think this was an option for my 1970 Parisienne convertible as i have not seen one in the 46 years I have had the car! The parts book is also vague so if anyone knows let me know. Maybe this guy installed an older seat but i like mine to be all original. Thanks Phil

Yes, he's installed an earlier seat.   1967 still had the speaker in the top middle of the seat, not sure about 1968.  Here's the proper rear speaker for 1969 & 1970:

That was a neat location in the rear seat. Uncles 65 Impala had it in the middle

This is what it looks like on my 67. Very often at car shows people ask what it is.

The cheapening of GM interiors from the mid 60's to the early 70's was extreme. I look at the interior of my 69 2+2 with the cheapo jiggly plastic dash bezel and appliques compared to say a 65-66 with solid chromed metal and beautiful detailing is disheartening. Took GM over 40 years to fully recover from the "tupperware" era. The comparison of the 69-70 versus the 67 rear speakers in this thread visualize the decline beautifully.

It was surely cost cutting, but I wonder if some safety regulations killed the rear center speaker?

If you can get a chance, show us the interior colour.

Mark has entrusted me to hold on to some parts for future use.

I believe I have a dark green 1969 right rear panel with speaker grill

Not sure of what the 70 dark green looked like.

Those speaker grills are similar to rear speaker grills for a 1981 to 1991 K 5 Blazer... may be close enough!

Some more photo's of the rear speaker.  This is one that was broken on removal by the yard owner, but I epoxy'd the standoff's back on.   The grille is the key to the whole thing as the standoffs poke through the armrest panel, and contain clips that serve as nuts for the screws that attach the speaker from behind the armrest panel.
