Removing locking lug nuts - lost key

I am checking over our 97 Trans Am to see what it will need to pass a safety.  Of course when I went to pull the wheels today, the locking nut socket has developed legs. Nowhere to be found.

So now I have an issue. I don't have one of those nifty kits the shops have to hammer on a socket and zip it off. And I want the wheels off NOW.

I tried a bunch of normal sockets and couldn't find a good friction fit. Then an old Craftsman 13/16" 12 point chrome deep socket caught my eye, just a stray I think I found in a wrecking yard or something. It seemed to be a bit too small but I thought "What have I got to lose?" I hammered it on but tried not to hammer too hard, knowing it would likely split. All I can say, I'm glad Craftsman makes good sockets. On a couple of them I had to hammer it on a second time because the first time I didn't get it engaged enough and it started to strip the locking nut. In the end, Crafstman and a 1/2" impact wrench bailed me out! So if you have this situation, don't give up hope.

You can believe they won't go back on the car!

In the 11 years we've owned this car, I doubt it's ever been out of our sight whenever we took it out of the garage. We always park at restaurants where we can see our vehicle and it hasn't spent a night outside during our ownership. Not much point in having locking nuts on the wheels.

My Kia had factory locking wheel nuts. I bought the car used from the dealer and purchased new winter tires on wheels from a seller on Kijiji. The first time I installed the snow tires I couldnt get the locking nuts undone. I think when the car was safety inspected the tech working on it spun the nuts on with a 1/2 inch impact gun. Needless to say it no longer has locking nuts!

Removes most locking wheel nuts when the key has been misplaced. The sockets are designed for use with an impact wrench and are also great for removing damaged and stripped wheel nuts. They feature heavy-gauge, impact-grade steel construction.

Feature(s)

  • Heavy-gauge, impact-grade steel construction for strength and durability.

Application(s)

  • Use with an impact wrench to remove most locking wheel nuts when the key has been misplaced. Also great for removing damaged and stripped wheel nuts.

After leaving the locking lug nut socket key on my 2005 Accord and going for a spin, I was stuck with no key.

Like Carl, I tried pounding on a deep 12 point socket but it didn't bite. I bought the Princess Auto Locking Lug Nut Remover Set and they worked well. However, getting the locking lug nut out of the removal tool was a job in itself.

Had to use a pointed air chisel to get them off my daughters Murano last Saturday. She had new tires put on at outset of COVID at Canadian Tire and I could not find the key anywhere in the vehicle, probably sitting on the bench in the shop for past two years.

Useless things ! I have them on my steel wheels with hubcaps, WHY ??? Who's going to steal these ugly rims ? I have done the same thing to remove nuts in the past when I lost the socket, great idea.
