My sister-in-law from Alberta just called. They had been watching the news last night. They are worried because Morris made the news due to a potential flood. In case anyone saw that and was wondering, no worries. We may have some minor inconvenience from some high water but nothing to worry about. The problem is the media loves to grab a hold of the flood stories for our area and blow them out of proportion. At worst we might get a tiny bit of water on the highway from Winnipeg to the border. If you see a news story that makes it look awful here, just check with me if you want the real facts!

I remember a few years ago that there was an early thaw in North Dakota. The resulting water flow was causing ice jams in Manitoba and pushing huge blocks of ice onto the banks of the Red River. The flooding now seems minor compared to that.

This year the ice is long gone and the river is flowing like crazy so that will sure help. If we would have had the torrential rains 2 weeks ago like we had this weekend, we'd have been in big trouble. Now we might see some water on the main highway but there shouldn't be any homes or property in jeopardy.

It looks like there may be a highway 75 detour by late week. If anyone is heading south, it's a minor detour. 9 miles north of Morris you'll go about a mile east across the river, then take the highway the 9 miles between Morris and Aubigny, then back on to highway 76. It's only about a 10 minute delay in your drive.
Well, roughly 5" of rain in the last 8-9 days. That sure changes things. Now they say we are tracking to equal our 2nd worst flood ever (2009) or be very close to it if not equal. And I'm believing them from what I see. Often they cry wolf but this looks legit.

Dumb **** like this is why I don't watch news any more and try to verify that what I read is true.
If you would see this in news story, you would assume Kennedy street in Morris is closed, and you would assume that it's closed because of flooding, right?
Fact - Kennedy street is not flooding. In fact, it's inside the ring dike and it's not closed either. Kennedy street is the street that runs across highway 75 in Morris (75 is Morris main street) and behind the barricade you can make out the dike that has been filled in across 75 to protect the town. I can't stand it when they do this crap.
We are good here, but I'm pretty stressed out. Our daughter and son in law are in a place where the main floor is fine but the goofball who built it left a low area in the back at one spot and without some sandbagging the basement is being threatened. I spent some time there today but I'm worried for them, we have lots of water to get through here still.
I took a drive to our old farm this morning, the last day before it will be cut off. I drove across 2 stretches of about 20' where the water was about 2" deep but by now I'm betting it's pushing hard and washing out the gravel road.

I told my wife tonight, it's just material stuff being threatened. We get too uptight about our "stuff". I told her too, it's nothing that money, time and some hard work can't fully restore.
When our kids were little and crying over a small thing, I used to ask them, "is anyone hurt or dying"? If the answer was no we decided we had to get over it and move on. If something bad happens here it will be the same thing.

Picked up the Fake 68 and the 70 SS FoFiddyFo from Howard's last night... The gravel roads are a soggy mess already!
Hope your daughter and son in law make out OK ! When the water is up, Morris can still get out the east side correct ?

There is an excellent Youtube video of Rosenort, the community about 12 miles northwest of Morris where we now live. Those of you veterans here remember seeing my details of the 2009 flood when we lived on the farm which was about 1/2 way between Rosenort and Morris. I worked 35 years in Rosenort until retirement about 18 months ago, so all this is familiar to me.
The Rosenort community was protected by a large diversion (of the Morris River which runs smack through the community) after the 1997 flood. This is complete with a floodway gate which is controllable. Essentially it's a mini version of what protects the city of Winnipeg. You can see it at work in some of the video shots. The opening shot in this video is of the diversion bridge. Picture all that water running through town and you get a pretty good idea what the town of Rosenort would look like today without the diversion project. I believe this video was shot either yesterday or the day before.
