Flippers, some say more power to them but I don't !

I feel sorry for the elderly lady who put this car for sale last year.

1969 blue vert2.jpg

I found it wrongly listed on Kijiji and called her right away.

Had a nice chat with her and she said a fellow from Milton gets the first chance as this was his dream car.

She said he was not coming for a while and was going to give her $3,500.

I asked her to please call me back because I wanted to see the car.

I told her of my car and how I love these 1969s.

She said, "you don't need two"

She doesn't understand us biggrin

My guess is he stalled her all winter and picked it up this weekend.

11 hours ago, this shows up.

May be an image of car

It was his dream car alright, he had a dream about making a pile of money and he likely will.

Just reading back on the emails we sent back and forth on this car, Carl.

I still think this lady would have not broken her promise to this guy, no matter how much I offered her.

She had promised the car and she had principles.

But who knows, this car may have passed hands over the winter and this seller may not be the original flipper.

I better go to bed now, I'm a little bit too grumpy for the internet wink

I'm with you.  There are a lot of people with little to no principles using the hobby, and the honest people in the hobby, as their own little moneymaking scheme.

They say they are helping to get the cars into the hands of people who really want them, but they are not fooling anybody - they just want the cash in their pockets.

That's all I'm gonna say as I'm sure I've already offended someone...

Yep and those of us who would just like a nice old car are priced out of the market.

Cant stand car flippers. This is the kind of S that kills the hobby.
And in Ontario too. Its called curb-siding and is illegal in Ontario.

They never can seem to spell or take a photo with any skill either. You can spot one a mile away.

I feel the same way as I sold a car trailer years ago to a "guy" who said "he really needed it" 2 days later it was on Kijji but on the other hand I got what I wanted & have no control over what happens after that!!!

I've had that "wanted it all my life, bla bla bla" thing to only to find out it was flipped. Years ago I made up my mind that as long as I got what I wanted I wasn't going to let it ruin my day if it was on Kijiji right away. I admit though that a couple of times I've been unhappy because I found out later someone who genuinely needed it had missed out when I sold it.

Lots of people around that flip. I know people that buy cars in the fall cheap because people dont want to pay for storage. In the spring they clean the car up and usually end up selling the car at a local cruise night. I dont have a problem with it. A car is worth what people want to pay. I do feel bad when people are taken advantage of. I try and educate some people and tell them to raise the asking price. You can always come down if the price is too high and it doesnt sell.

I should have elaborated, as long as they don't lie to me, I have no problem with it either. But when they give you the song and dance about it being their dream (fill in the blank, car, truck, stereo, whatever) and have no intention of doing anything but making a profit, that ain't right.

I sure hope I didn't come across that way on the 72 GTO.

I think there is a "right way" and a "wrong way" to do it...

I have a buddy in the US who you could say is a car flipper. He's into BMWs, and has probably had 30-40 over the past 20 years. Some stay with him for years, some only for a couple of months. He knows the cars well (which ones are the most desirable, what the problems are, what they cost to fix etc), and has a knack for finding the right cars at the right price, and a willingness to hop on a plane and go get them. Typically, his flips involve some level of effort to make the car more desirable - everything from take care of all the minor wear and tear items (brakes, ball joints, bushings, etc) to major things like manual transmission swaps or doing rod bearings on motors where that is a "known issue", and often the extra touches like the "right" set of factory optional wheels or the "right" set of springs and dampers. If you're looking for a good deal on a clean "unicorn" BMW that needs a few things to make it perfect, you might end up hating him when he beats you to it, but he is adding value and he does have a passion for the cars. I think there's a place for that.

On the other hand, the guys who put nothing into the cars, and try to pass themselves off as life-long enthusiasts, or even worse, the "lipstick on a pig" types who cover up issues and scam both the previous owner and the next... I don't have much time for that.

I agree. If you buy a car and add real value to it and then resell for a profit you are not a flipper and nobody should have a problem with that. If you manipulate somebody into underselling their vehicle and then immediately turnaround and advertise it for more you are a flipper. I think we all know them when we see them as they usually sound like a used car salesman.

I gotta say there is a line, straight flippers jacking prices for no reason are garbage for sure. But I bought a Mercury Comet in Northern Alberta with a fresh engine in it, drove it 4000kms home and after realizing I wanted a 3 on the tree (just got a Strato Chief) I did an aluminium rad, carb, cap, plugs etc and sold it for nearly double what I paid for it. You know what though, I don't feel bad because the guy who bought it wasn't willing to take the risk of buying a car sight unseen, in the middle of no where, drive it home, do the work, scour the internet etc. He pretty much got his hands on a near perfect car with no work. I guess I could have left it to decay on some guys farm but for what? I had a blast and learned a bunch working on it. I think getting the cars back into use is important. So I think if people are willing to put the work in why not make a buck. It's part of the hobby. I wish I had every car I ever owned but you gotta finance your hobby/habit some how!

I'm not sure if I really fall under the flipper banner as I do buy and sell to make extra cash for the car addiction. However I fell I do value added. As I will always clean, fix, reassemble and sometimes part a car out and save the items I need and sell the rest to pay for the original purchase. It's the only way I can enjoy the hobby. Most of what I do is parts vs cars as I can stash away stuff to deal with at a later date.

Later, Eric

Eric, you are a car fan and in my opinion do not fall under this class.

The seller of this car is not even from Ontario, if you look at the info.

Probably listing for a friend or relative.

They don't even know anything about the car.

Can't even spell.

Based on my conversation with the former owner, that's 145,000 Miles not 45,000.

Probably still in the original owner's name so they don't have to pax tax to transfer.

That one I was after last year was like that.

All my flips turn into frame off restorations where I lose a year of my life and 5-10k.

like could at least put 4 of the same tires on it and replace more then just the one headlight and clean it up if your going to flip it. still think its an outrages flip cost for what it sounds like what they paid for it.
