ya, evaporust or vinegar they wont hurt the original zinc finish. but i find that the results are poor, as the tin gets pretty pitted. yours looks like it would clean up ok tho.

As promised, my update on cleaning this. I soaked it in Evapo-Rust. I had planned to do it a couple of hours. At that point I checked it and could see progress but it still needed more. Planned to do a few more hours but forgot it soaking overnight! No harm done though. I'd say I'm happy with it. It's not perfect but it's really nice and clean. I like that better than shiny new, in trying to keep with my "survivor" appearance on the car.
I didn't do anything with the top part at the back (the end where the rubber bumpers are). I was more concerned with the area where it had clearly seen cigarette action and I'm pretty happy with the finished product there.

Sorry Carl, I've been meaning to chime in. I think I did one years ago by soaking it in CLR. I presume it's less toxic then Evapo-Rust, and was happy with the result.

If you ever wondered what an ashtray looked like new the one in my survivor 69 Ventura wagon gives a good idea. You can still see the rainbow shine of the trivalent chromate stabilization coating that was applied over the zinc. This is the same stuff you would have seen on brake boosters in the day but the used a far less concentrated solution on the ashtray because of it's indoor environment. The purpose of this extra coating was to prevent that white powder type stuff you see on zinc or tin coatings when they get wet while still freshly plated.
