They used to break the front windshield at the top corner.. if it hooked hard it would twist the frame. The 375HP was known for it especially if it was drag raced a lot.

I would think subframe connectors would be a must on an L79 with good gears and good slicks.

And I'm assuming you mean the 350 HP 327.

Years ago a friend owned a 66 nova hardtop. It was a 327/three on the wheel. Not a high perf 327, but he put an aluminum intake on it with a holley carb and went drag racing. I never saw it race, but apparently it worked very well. Quite a few fellow racers talked him into putting a four speed in it. He told me years later that the car was faster with the three speed trans. He said he could run in second gear but with the four speed he finished in third gear. One more shift that the car really didnt need.

More than a few buyers opted for the fully synchro 3 speed rather than pay the almost $250 option fee for a 4 speed.

That would be equivalent to approx. a $2500. option today.

Lotsa guys said the 3 speed was better (to justify their frugality) but in reality with

proper gearing it was no match for a 4 speed especially on the first to second shift.

(Three speeds caused the revs to drop substantially between shifts - never ever saw a competitive 3 speed on the column or floor).

I once drove a 66 Grande Parisienne 327 with 3 on the tree........no.

IIRC from the book Glory Days the only competitive 3 speed car was Jim Wangers' 1959 Catalina,

no 4 speeds were available at the time.

Jim ran a 5:88 rear gear and left the line in second with only one shift. Imagine hearing that for the first time........smile.
