Vinyl dye....

Need to dye the dash pad on my car. Anyone got any tips?  What brand of dye to use?  How does it stand up?

Thanks in advance

I have had good success with SEM vinyl die. Process Ive used is to scrub the part as clean as possible, wipe and let dry. Wipe the part down with SEM vinyl prep and spray the item.

x 2. I replaced my original cracked black dash on my 2+2, with a tan dash. I cleaned it with soap and water and sprayed it with SEM semi-gloss black, before installing. I did this back in 2010 and the dash still looks like it was originally black. Absolutely no chipping, peeling or discoloration. I have used SEM on door panels and seats with excellent results!

On the 65 I used a custom colour of blue in a spray can, made up at a paint supply. Picked a blue that I thought might be close to the factory shade.

Scrubbed and cleaned the pad. Wiped it all with wax and grease remover.

Gave it a light scuff with fine Scotchbrite.

One more cleaning

Applied adhesion promotor. One light coat.

Applied the paint. 2 light coats. Let dry for one day.

Top coated it with SprayMax 2K satin epoxy.

Repeated the same on the pan.

Turned out perfect and has stood up for 2 years.

You need not use "Dye", paint works just fine. Or it did at least in my case.

Good info Mark. I'll ask my paint shop guy.

My question would be which one would be more durable?  I don't know the answer, but "dye" sounds like it gets into the material and changes the colour, whereas "paint" sounds like it is a covering that could wear off with use.  Mind you, in a classic car that will be treated with kid gloves, either sounds acceptable.

To be honest, I think todays "Dye" is really just flexible paint with UV protection and adhesion properties built in.

And one time it probably was actual Dye, I think the name is a leftover from days long past.

There was a time when you could get SEM up here in any custom colour, but it's difficult today.

Makes sense.  I was fooled by the name.
