I now own it Sep 6 22 Damaged 1998 Silverado 1500 4X4 305 Regular cab 8 ft box

I thought you all would be interested in my latest endeavor.

My neighbor went offroad and nailed a tree close to dead center. The airbag saved her any damage, she had x-rays and was out in 5-6 hours, thinks she may have a cracked rib, so really lucky. It was a single car accident.

She/her deceased husband bought it new, it has 103,000 KMs, original paint, it has been rust proofed somewhat and most of the paint issues seem to be flaking paint- haven't seen any holes anywhere. She had no collision insurance so I offered to take it apart and see what needs replacing. I haven't had one of these apart before so just proceeding slowly.

Any advice from experienced people is appreciated.

Its a real nice truck, air, locks, windows, never had anything attached to the hitch, probably never had more than a few hundred lbs of anything in the box. Almost no one has used the passenger side seat and it has always been garaged.

Is there such a thing as a shop manual for one of these?

In looking at www.car-part.com, looks like most things interchange 1988-1999, Chev pickup, GMC, Yukon, Tahoe, Suburban? Other than styling/branding changes?

I looked briefly at reproduction parts available on Rockauto, very large selection and unbelievable low pricing. I assume the original junkyard stuff is much better quality though?

So far, it needs a hood, grill, bumper and brackets, driver side headlight and bucket, lower bumper rubber/plastic trim, rad support, rad, fan shroud, transmission cooler, air bag driver's side, and more to come as I peel it off. Both front fenders are likely usable, both doors open and close normally.

One thing, there is a slight mark on the oil on the firewall where the engine touched it, not sure what the consequences of that would be?

Pics below.

Those are vehicle options. Probably would be way cheaper if you could find someone parting out one of those trucks and get the whole front clip including rad etc. I know that there is lots of these being parted in Ont.

I helped a friend years ago, he had one with similar damage. Got the rad support and rad back in and it wouldnt start, lots of backfires We found that the distributor had hit the firewall in the collision and it was broken. Not the cap, the aluminum casting was broken. Also the aftermarket A/C condenser didnt even last a year, by a good quality condenser. The only other odd thing was that the sway bar was broken. I dont know if it was related to the collision but it was broken right at the frame bracket on the drivers side. I didnt know it was broken until some time later I disconnected the sway bar link and the broken piece fell out of the bushing.

Looks like front cross member is bent. That would draw in the frame rails. May have to go to frame shop. Will be able to tell once rad support is removed. Try an add on Kijiji, someone might have the parts locally. Rock Auto is great for small parts but the shipping kills the good price on larger pieces. Son could'nt find a good used rad support for his 95, so last week bought a repop from parts store for $165. We put on a repop grill and bumper 13 years ago and is holding up well.

I AGREE WITH BARRY ON THE FRAME , SHOULD BE CHECKED.

LOOKS LIKE THE FENDERS CAN BE SAVED.

THE RIGHT GUY ON THE RACK CAN SAVE THAT RAD SUPPORT AS WELL.

Got some more removed today, tips of frame had a small rip on each side and it should be checked I agree. Can the ac lines be reused/straightened? What are the lines coming out of the driver side frame, fuel maybe? I see smaller lines below which Im guessing are brakes?

Thanks for the good help.

The rad still had a litre or 2 in it, even though it was bent bad.

The clutch fan is very stiff to spin and 1 fan blade missing.

Is that electrical panel supposed to be horizontal?

I have a 1998 GMC Sierra - Short box on Kijiji right now looking for a new home.

Has a 4.3L.  Needs a gas tank and fuel lines installed.  Parts provided.

Front end in assembly line shape.

Yes but get ready for sticker shock. It's 4 books, and the freight will likely add about 1/2 the price again of the manual cost.

Thanks for the info. Carl, I had a set like that, 4 books, for a ford, got them in a batch I bought. I do have a 73 Chev factory if anyone needs one. The ford manuals were about a 6-7 inch high pile.

I already found a hood locally and have someone locally who has most of the parts I think. First need is to see if the frame needs straightening which Im pretty sure it does.

This is an ebay ad for shop manuals, are these the manuals I need? Volumes 1-4? Just so I know what to look for.

Yes I did, thanks. I do like paper manuals though, nice to have handy when working on something.

The frame ends are chewed up and the cross pieces in front plus the rad support mounts are bent. I can get the front section, from under the front of the cab, of a southern frame. That would mean pulling the motor, transmission, suspension, etc and removal of the cab.

I like the pdf manuals as you can just print off the pages you need to take them out to the garage.  Then you don't worry about getting the book full of greasy fingerprints and torn up.  That might be just me, though, as I have a thing about taking good care of my books... aww

Im leaning toward replacement front frame section and thinking of the following sequence, I havent done a cab removal before so thinking of this sequence.

1. Remove box as this gives me more room to remove the cab a bit backward away from the motor.
2. Remove cab and Place cab or rear of frame.
3. Can I support the transmission and remove the engine?
4. I can then grind out the welds holding the rear frame section inside the front frame section?

I think box removal is easy, Ive done that on my Tacoma to replace the metal fuel tank. Never touched a 4x4 transfer case and automatic transmission.

Thanks for any help.

Saw this pile of front sections today, they have surface rust only, there are about 6 in the pile. C6582170-6867-4CDE-88BE-DE01B440AE7F.jpeg
