Interesting article with even more interesting comments at the end of it. I think this article proves that antique car owners need to be left alone to drive these cars the 2-3000kms a year like we've always done as the pollution they create is a drop in the bucket. Now for the footprint the EV makes I think to be honest someone needs to compare the carbon footprint left by the manufacturing and ownership of a gas powered vehicle and an EV. The only real difference in manufacturing materials needed to build an EV is the lithium for the batteries and whatever other metals are in a battery that we don't find in the electrical systems of a gas vehicle. Perhaps the EV does create a larger carbon footprint during manufacturing than the gas vehicle but is that offset with the fact they don't require gasoline/oil etc during ownership? What's the carbon footprint of a replacement EV battery? The sad truth is whether you are for EV's or against them it's easy to swing the arguement into your favor so we may never really know which is benificial.
I listened to a recent Hemmings Podcast that featured a guy in the US who has a 57 Chevy Pickup with a supercharged LS motor and a 5 speed running on Hydrogen. Zero emissions from the tailpipe.
He was a former GM engineer and worked with Bosch on the PCM and injectors. A Canadian firm built the special fuel tank to hold the high pressure hydrogen. It runs and drives just like a gas vehicle. The next challenge will be to produce "Green" Hydrogen as much of the hydrogen today requires a lot of natural gas to produce.
Here's something else I recently learned: A fellow had a Hyundai EV and the battery failed. It was covered under the 8 year unlimited mileage battery warranty. The replacement however only has a 1 year 20000km warranty. He's on the hook for big bucks if that replacement battery fails and imagine if that happens while still making his $500/month payments...

Todd,

Here's a TED Talk from a guy who owned an electric car and has done

an analysis of Electric cars and CO2, and how our measuring of CO2 emissions is wrong.
