Cordless drill

Likely 10 years ago I bought a Canadian Tire (Mastercraft) 20 volt drill and impact kit. It's been great, I've used it mercilessly on anything and everything. This week the drill started to seize up occasionally. So far if I smack it around I can get it to go again. When it works, it works great but obviously the writing is on the wall, time to replace.

Question is, do I buy this again or buy something better like a Milwaukee? The one thing I don't like about the Milwaukee is it's such a brute for size and weight vs the smaller lighter Mastercraft. The majority of the time it will be used for automotive stuff and I'm worried the Milwaukee would irritate me when it's too big to fit up under a dash or something.  Input please if you have experience, especially if it's Milwaukee experience.

Thanks!

What about a Dewalt? I've have mine for about 9 years and it's been fantastic. It takes alot of abuse.

My mastercraft did the same thing Carl , seemed like a flat spot in the electrical? Im now using a corded one, a monster. Doing without in tight spaces, mostly able to loosen them with a socket etc then use my Bosch drill to remove the rest of the way.

I use a Ryobi cordless around home, watch for the sales and buy the combo kit with drill and impact. Usually around 129 but watch for deals, 98 online order right now.
Have had to replace batteries on the first one I bought, 10 years ago, but they are worth more than the kits so bought another kit instead.
so now have replacement tools, LMAO. never have enough tools.

We use these at work, and were tough on them. You can get a 1/4 and 3/8 socket adapter aswell.D77B5D0C-E160-4EF6-A5FF-F6F7B68E587D.png

Is the 12 volt enough? I was looking at that but I already have an 18 volt Milwaukee battery so was kind of wishing I could stick with the 18.

However I am betting the 12 is a lot more compact drill, a feature which I really would like to have.

Milwalkee stuff is coming on strong.  i have the 12 v driver(not impact one)  that is awsome and light for driving screws, etc.    I have always been a Makita person my whole life and so was my dad,  everything i own is makita,  i would recomend makita for the 18V stuff.      but really,  i would not even consider buying a cordless anything unless it was Makita or Milwaukee.     Ive used several Mastercraft at work and they all eventually suck rocks.  they start strong but are crap after awhile.    Dont get me started on Dewalt, wouldnt touch that brand personally ever ever ever.

I'm surprised to hear you are having problems with Dewalt tools. My impact and drill have been bulletproof. A friend of mine has nothing but Dewalt cordless tools and said he has only had one problem and that was with a new circular saw he bought a week ago. Maybe the quality isn't as good on the new ones.

I had an ancient Craftsman 12V that finally smoked and died so the wife bought me this DeWalt 20V kit from CT last Christmas.

WAY more power/torque and very small and more comfortable than the old Craftsman too, can't speak for longevity but so far so good and it seems to go on sale at least once a month.

My old Craftsman finally bit the dust.

My latest cordless is a DeWalt. Best Ive ever owned, great battery life and charges fast, lots of torque, durable and the bonus is regular sales on them. That little light that comes on when you touch the trigger is handy too!

Same mindset Todd,

Cordless,no recharging required and can be used as a arm muscle developer.

Used for decades by craftsmen and easily transportable.

We have two of those handmixers that my wife uses on a regular basis. Both are antiques. We also have a crank meat grinder. I better bet back on topic or a thread derail meme will appear.
Like everyone says and it's true for everything- buy the best you can afford.

 That sir, is HILARIOUS!!

I have some M12 stuff, I believe it's nearly phased out;

M18 might be the way to go.

I am shocked (punn intended) that you got ten years of use from your master-crap stuff, I regularly hear of their stuff not lasting near that long.

From what I have understood Dewalt taken a real hit in the quality department too.

Haha!  That's awesome, George!  Actually it looks very much like the one we used to have, with a few differences in the handle.  It actually worked surprisingly well.
