When I joined Bell Canada as a Project Manager I'd be in charge of various things including installing new phone systems at customer premises.
It was a transition time, from when various features required additional hardware, to the new equipment had all the capabilities, but required licenses to turn them on.
Sounds like the auto industry is catching on to this idea.

THAT IS HILARIOUS!!

BMW is both streamlining, and (seeminly) reducing manufacturing costs on the merits of less sub assemblies, and then on the back end making a theoretical infinite return on the point of sale!!

Genius.
