I totally echo that. 2 months short of two years at this and most days I pinch myself to make sure it's not just a dream.

Congratulations, I did the same last winter. Turned 60 in December, but hung on for a bit to get a few things through benefits in January. Took my 2 weeks vacation, returned for 2 days and done!!!!

I'm trying to get my wife to retire but she says she's not ready. I always have preached "You have no idea what's out there waiting for until you retire". I did 40 years, GM dealership parts manager at 2 different dealerships, retired and got asked to be a cell guard at the local RCMP detachment. I really NEVER dreamed of guarding prisoners but I love it!

You might well be amazed what is just around the corner for you Dave.

Oh, and by the way HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

I retired at 58 after 30 years and dont regret it one bit. I had a dislike for one of the senior managers and when that manager announced that he wasnt going to retire and was staying until he was 70 I decided to retire. I would have stayed until 65 because I liked my job but couldnt stand him.

Congratulations Dave, so we can expect your post count to increase! Best wishes.

Paul's post resonates with me about the terrible Senior Manager. I'm 6 months away from my 65th birthday and the board just made me the CEO! so I agreed to lt least work until December 2024. I never want to be that guy, the reason someone retires or moves.

So far I am having a blast and can easily say that CEO is the best gig I ever had!

If you are able, start practicing it early (cut back on hours)

I don't think it would have been an easy transition for me if I'd gone from about 47 hours per week down to nothing all at once. At 55 I went to 4 days a week, at 60 went to 3 days a week.

Same boat here, just turned 60 and needed some medical stuff done, but will go back for a bit just to make sure I'm good to go.
But looking forward to not having to deal with certain people soon. Probably within the next year I will pull the plug at work.

The day you regret that will come Kevin. Suddenly you'll say "I'm too old for this or that" and wish you'd retired and done it sooner.

The other day I had a full list of chores/duties/projects in my head. I was out in the garage with the doors open when my friend pulled up. He was returning something he'd borrowed. As he was walking away he said "I'm going to Tim's, do you want to come?" My brain instantly said "No", then in a few seconds it said "And what good reason do you have to say no?". You bet I went!

Early on in my transition to a 4 day workweek, I started going for coffee with my brother on Friday afternoons when I was off. He had been down from a heart attack and was finally getting back in the saddle. I took off that time knowing full well there was a list of things to do at home that needed done.

My brother died suddenly the following January. I have NEVER regretted spending that leisure time with him.

In case you can't tell, I am a huge fan of retiring early.

I was urged to read this thread this morning when Carl stopped by for a visit/parts gathering. Always said I would go at 62, which is almost exactly a year from now. Lately have been doubting the date but I think it is just fear. Believe I will stick to my schedule and join y'all while I can still enjoy projects

Congratulations! 13 years in, and no regrets. Tragically, the Mayor of Goderich (where bjburnout resides, fulltime!) died in an accident two weeks ago, a few months shy of his 65th birthday. He never got to harvest the fruits of his labours, and his passing reinforced my conviction that we're better to get out early, even if we can't afford to sponsor a chair at our alma maters or put our name on the wing of the local hospital, than to hang on to accumulate more "stuff".

Agreed. As long as I can pay my basics I'm happy. I don't need a fancy house or car. That's a good thing since just after 2 months of my new career I gave my notice last week. At almost 55 working 13 hour days and 60 hour weeks running a facility with 16 silos by myself was too much. On to the next chapter! This is the shortest period that I have worked any job.
