There have been attempts to turn Australia into a Republic but has never happened. As far as I am aware it needs a referendum in every State and also Federally to get above 50%.
The sticking point will always be who elects the Head of State - I don't think anyone wants it to be a political appointment ie jobs for the boys, or diversity hire or whatever.
And I should add - RIP Elizabeth II. And agree with the sentiments of the OP and most others here.

And yet the governor general and the monarchy dismissed our labor governmant in 1974. The monarchs are still our head of state, otherwise we wouldnt have the governor generals, swear allegiance to the king/queen, etc etc.. I would like to see Australia have no ties with monarch what so ever.

the referendum ole johnny put forward was designed to fail by giving 2 unpalatable options to the public. If the question was "do you want the monarch as our head of state" that would be a no. no doubt it will come up again In another referendum.

To continue this tangent, I am going to read further to see the differences in the Canadian government system versus the Australian system.
My read of that link, has this section clearly stand out:

So unlike your account, it reads like the Governor General did not do anything on his own merit, but sought legal counsel on what to do.
It also reads as though the government had two options, and refused to do either, and only then did the Governor General seek legal counsel...
In Canada, my understanding is that AS SOON as a government holds a vote on one if their bills, and is defeated, that non-confidence vote immediately causes government to shut down, and election to happen.
What I have been reading/hearing lately is our minority Liberal government (hold the house by most elected members, but do not have enough members to pass any bills, because the combined numbers of the opposition out number them) has made a pact with another party's elected members of government, and is passing bills by the two parties conspiring together; What we have happening right now, by all accounts does NOT have the support of the populous, and they have decided to team up with our furthest to the political left politicians (typically this party has only had one elected official, the party leader - they tend to be on the fringe for many of their policies), and these two parties are making many people even more upset by the shenanigans that are ensuing.
Unfortunately, being a Constitutional Monarchy, or at least the Canadian version of one, we cannot recall our elected officials...
Maybe I misinterpreted you, but the idea of the government being dissolved, and the opposition doing ANYTHING unchecked, seems not only completely distasteful, but it also seems to put into question the entire governmental system.

There was actually a heck of a lot more going on in the background politically. There is a really good podcast called the dimissal worth listening to.
