Ever seen one of these?

The lady I got my truck from has this bulb, it works too. She lived in Halifax during WW2, its a blackout bulb. The black section emits zero light , the ring at the top emirs a pale reddish glow, enough to not fall over the furniture in the dark. E0855107-0A04-46A1-A91B-C73756B4B884.jpeg

Interesting piece. Doing the time/age calculation, going to be someone at least in their 80's to remember this... I don't think we have anybody here on this site.... DO WE??

I have seen them only in museums. Definitely not old enough to have used one! This is a description from a Florida museum:
Blackout light bulbs. Dim-out and blackout restrictions forced coastal residents to reduce light levels due to German submarine threats. These lights, which complied with War Department standards, were part of the inventory of a Fort Lauderdale Beach drugstore.

The Germans sunk a lot of ships just after pearl harbour when the us entered the war because they left all the lights on on the east coast. If you read about the submarine war and the number of ships sunk, the silhouette of my city made a great backlight for torpedoes.
