Made a small discovery today,

Dateline, Summer 2017, My wifes father Francis and I get to the Gaspe' house he's just purchased from his cousin, and start cutting some brush in a small grove in the back. I quickly discover a Black 1957 Chevrolet six hood in the bramble. Excitedly tell Frankie... Right away he replies, oh yeah, back in 63 or so my cousin had a 57 4 door sedan that needed work, so we got better parts from the wreckers, changed them, and chucked the damaged parts in the bush like everyone did. So I clean the hood up, and not really having any use for it, make a makeshift firewood shelter out of it.

Today I'm going through some of Mel's family pictures and find a shot of her sisters taken in 60, in what I assume to be Murdochville PQ. And they are standing In front of what appears to be a Black 57 Chevrolet base 4 door sedan. Hmm. Did Frankie's cousin or that same car actually visit Murdochville that day long ago? Even though 1957 Chevrolet 4 door sedans were probably everywhere in Gaspe' then, I'm thinking... maybe. Well, my wife tells me that yes, it's the same car! Same hood. Wow!

RE: Made a small discovery today,

That's what you call a keepsake.

I grabbed the arrowhead from the 2-spoke wheel on a friend's torture-tested Laurentian as a keepsake before sending it on it's way. That friend also had on his wall a nice center section of grille from his 244 GL that came off when a guy pulled out in front of him while he was going 55 mph in New York. The guy who pulled out improperly, well his car had to be picked up & dragged as it wouldn't roll. As for the Volvo, he made his report and turned around and drove home after finding the grille. That grille on his wall is a keepsake.  smile

If it were perfect, I'd rather it make it's way onto a runner, but it isn't, and you can buy them new now anyway. The amazing thing is it sat out right side up for almost 60 years, and the paint still kind of polishes up.

I'll eventually make a proper post base for it. And I have a 59 Pontiac hood (huge) that I'd like to take out there as well for a repurpose, maybe sit beside the 57. They do make good cover.

My dream someday is to have a few yard art ponchos in the back sitting up on a manicured lawn, surrounding our firepit, but Gaspe' is just too far away to haul any hulks out there, and old stuff is really sparse.

Ive been watching for an old hood or trunk lid to use as a canopy over the man door into my shop. Doesnt get much more iconic than a 57 Chevy!

We used to find a lot of the old cars around here with no hoods as the guys would take them off to use as sleds behind skidoos for hauling wood or kids.  Not much left of them when we did run across them.

You want hulks/ I got hulks! I'll make ya a bulk deal. Its funny that my wife doesn't regard them as yard art
