Exactly. My thinking is this guy is out of touch. It's the "new" world we live in. We had it easy for decades but that's changed.

I went to buy groceries the other day. Lettuce was $8/head. I looked at it, kept on going without it. The same thing I do sometimes when I think it's just too much cost to drive somewhere, I don't do it. We'd like some new furniture. It's just too much money. We aren't buying yet.

This guy WANTS a new car. He doesn't NEED a new car. Maybe he needs a newer car but I doubt he can prove to me he HAS to have exactly the car he is shopping for. And there's lot of dealers out there where he is. He's not restricted to one dealer. Nobody forced him to say it has to be from that particular dealer.

When we ordered our new pickup I would have loved for it to be cheaper and to have exactly the equipment I wanted and no extra. This isn't 1966 any more. I can't order exactly the vehicle I want like I could then.

A good friend of mine wanted to buy a new Kia venue. When he went to the dealer they didnt have any on the lot. They had one coming in for stock so they offered it to him if he put a deposit on it. The salesperson said if he didnt like the car when it came in they would refund the deposit. He said that he thought it felt odd putting down a deposit when he hadnt even driven a Venue to see if he liked it. The salesperson sent him to a competitors car lot because they had a used one on the lot and he could probably test drive it. Well he did test drive the used car and liked the feel of it and did buy the new one when it came in. Interestingly the new car ended up being $2000 cheaper than the used one that was two years old!

Making it mandatory to opt in for "Options" kind of negates the meaning of the word doesn't it?

This behavior will certainly help them hold that stellar and rock solid reputation.

Not surprised one iota unfortunately.

I got stuck in the "order your 2021 with incentives" trap.

Waited all last year for a truck.

Finally bought a good used truck and switched my deal to that new Canadian made, SUV, that was on the lot.

The dealers I deal with never put this pressure on me for added junk.

I won't even buy locking wheel nuts.

Went to help my Niece last year buy a New Canadian Made, Honda Civic.

The sales pressure was unbelievable.

The sales team acted like a bunch of toddlers that couldn't get what they want.

It was really something to see and I'm sure they do this a lot.

This bad uncle wouldn't let them have any candy biggrin

My wife's uncle just put a deposit down on a new Ford Maverick last week. Will be in next June.

I hope things are better for him and when his time comes.

We ordered our truck June 11th. We picked it up November 7th, almost 5 months. I'm told that is really good. Reading on the Colorado/Canyon forum, some guys who ordered from dealers who had used up their "allotment" for orders on Canyons and Colorados ordered their truck months before us and still don't have it.

We were asked if we wanted all the extras, paint protection, undercoating, interior protection and all that. I have no problem with salesmen doing that. It's no different than being in a drive through for fast food and they ask if you would like to bump up the size of what you ordered, or add fries, dessert, whatever. Sales is a part of life.

I actually even asked them not to put any dealer identification on the truck and explained that if they did it would be coming off anyway. After working at a dealership for 35 years, I at least wanted the new truck to have the dealer sticker from the place that employed me for 35 years (and it now has that dealer sticker on it.) If my old boss could have gotten us this truck it would have been from him but he told us there was no way he could guarantee it would be built if we ordered it from him. He actually told us to go to a place who could get one,  so we ordered where we knew we could get it.

As it was, our truck came without the spray in bedliner we ordered and we had to pick a different colour than was on the order when it was submitted.

I'm of the opinion we've been spoiled a long time and let's be happy for how good we had it until recently, rather than complain that things aren't the way they used to be. Would I like to go back to the old ways? You bet, but I don't think we'll ever see "normal" again as consumers.

I suppose the fact that one could even consider a new car is an indication that maybe all isn't so bad.

Yes, better to look on the bright side rather than be dragged down in all of this.

Someone told me they wanted to buy a fridge, a particular model and it might be available around June 2023.

We needed a fridge during the height of Covid and the shipping backlog. Went in and were given a list of what they had. So pick from this they said, so thats what we did. Same as Cars I suppose.

Yeah, it would have been 6 months for exactly what we wanted.

In June we wanted to try out a Canyon to see if we liked them before we bought one. The dealership had just gotten a 2022 Colorado in trade. It had 17,000 km on it. We knew it wasn't the truck we wanted because we didn't like the colour and it was missing some of the equipment we wanted but we tried it out and liked it. Just for fun I asked the price on it. Then we sat down and did up a a quote for a 2022 Canyon if we would order it. The one we ordered with more equipment wasn't even $1,000 more than the used one. I said "nobody is going to pay that much for that used Colorado". A week later on a phone call I was told the Colorado had sold and for full asking price. I said "why would anyone in their right mind pay almost the same price for a used truck with less equipment". The answer was, "they didn't want to wait". As Mark said, it's the way of the world. We are seeing purchases that make no sense, pricing like we never had dreamed of, and we've had to learn to wait for things.

I believe a contract is a contract, if I order a new vehicle it should be the price it says on the order. If the price is subject to change, it should say that clearly on the contract, not somewhere in the fine print on the back of the contract. If they insist on adding expensive dealer installed options, that should be included at time of order. A deal is a deal.

If I sell something or buy something, I expect a deal to be a deal. Old fashioned I guess.

I wouldnt buy from a dealer who added a lot of surprise costs at the last minute to a new vehicle, with all of the complex systems on new vehicles , if you need warranty work, their interpretation of a warranty may be fuzzy too. And their service staff may be generous with my wallet when I have the vehicle serviced. Trust means something.

When we bought our truck, nothing in the contract mentioned the over $500 worth of extras the dealership tossed in for no charge when I went to pick up the truck. Some people might say "well, you're one of those customers who paid too much for the truck so they could afford to do that". I see if differently. We agreed on a price we were happy with, ordered the truck and when we picked up the truck all those extras were a nice surprise. There were no extra costs added last minute, but I know exactly what you are saying. The cost was exactly what we signed for when we went to pick it up.

In late 2018 we wanted to buy another Flex as my wife really liked our old one but it was getting mile-ed out. Since our local dealership had been shut down for a bunch of "irregularities" we decided to go to a big city one and see what professional service was like.

It was brutal. The punkey sales guy didn't even know that Ford still made them. We had to insist he look them up.  Of course they had none on their massive lot so we had to order one. 4 months later we were still waiting. When I phoned to see when it might show up the guy said it was taking a while because they had to import them, complicated transport etc. So I explained to him that they made them in Ontario and maybe he should learn something about the cars he sells. I have to say I was kind of snotty at that point but since this is pretty much the biggest dealership in Edmonton I was actually expecting to be treated as well as the ads said I would be We finally took delivery on the 5th month and it has been a good vehicle but every time I have phoned for parts or an inquiry I have never even gotten a return call even though they keep sending me text reminders and sales pitches, so I have written them off.

The environment may be different these days (ie generally worse) but a crappy dealership is a crappy dealership.

This is why I want a Deux Cheveaux.

And a couple of side notes to this story-

1) Why didn't CTV at least go to the dealership and get their side of the story?

2) The week after we bought our Canyon, I started getting what I figured was a spam call (area code 866) on my cell phone every morning, Mon-Fri around 10:30 AM. This went on a for about a week or so. I rarely use my cell, it can go days without receiving a call.  I finally googled the number and it shows up as Sirius XM radio trying to call me. Lots of complaints about that number, if you pick up they hang up, pick up and nobody there etc. Now it all made sense. I went on line, found a phone number for Canada, pressed the right buttons to get a human, explained that yes we had a new truck, please take us off your call list and if we want to subscribe we will call you. That was 3 days ago I did that and so far that number has never tried again. So again, nobody made me buy something I didn't want, I always have the option to say no, even if they are annoying and persistent.
